      Medicated Koi Food

The new FDA Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) has eliminated the availability of antibiotics and medicated feed without a veterinary prescription and VFD from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

      Thanks Billy... interesting stuff.
I wonder if the "veterinary client patient relationship" definition is what is making it harder to get antibiotics that can be
injected too. I've been told repeatedly that nothing will be prescribed without a office visit with the fish in question here in WA.
Or else I don't know the right vets.

All states are cracking down because of misuse, limited antibiotics for vet care and the rise of super bugs. Other items such as dispensing dog heart worm prevention meds with an office visit and prescription only is profit driven.

Well the article says it affects Romet and Terramycin. So am not going to worry about it. You can still buy many medicated koi foods on line without vet. The article also is talking about fish farmers and producers. If I understand it correctly.

All I did was google medicated koi foods and all kinds of them popped up and was able to order. Other than that I have nothing.

It's also happening for other animal feeds.

Most of those foods are worthless anyway. It is easy to make your own food by adding the type if antibiotic you need to your own food. I make 4 or 5 different types of medicated food when I need it. I make them specifically for what is needed.

Here is the unfortunate reason why it has gotten strict, and will continue to do so. We all should be somewhat familiar to antibiotic resistance. It is not only a health concern, but also a huge financial one. The fact of the matter is, because bacteria have been adapting to antibiotics so well in the last decade, it winds up not being profitable for drug companies to make new antibiotics. Most major pharmaceutical companies have said that they will no longer be investing in new antibiotic drug development. This is because it costs so much in research, development, and FDA clearance. Then they market the drug and within a couple of years it is obsolete/non-functional before they have even gotten a return. The medical community and government agencies are trying very hard to limit access to all antibiotics in hopes that they will remain effective longer because there are no new ones coming.

What you are seeing/hearing is the way it is supposed to work. A vet cannot dispense treatments without seeing the patient, just like a doctor cannot order meds without having seen the patient. That technically is malpractice. Now, some of us have vets that are willing to violate that portion of the law, and take our words for what is needed and sell it to us, knowing that there are no aquatic vets within a reasonable drive. I had one vet that said that he would dispense the antibiotics but I would have to do a sample for him to do a culture and sensitivity test to determine the best antibiotic. One problem with that is that the fish could be dead before the results come in due to delays along the way. Current vet got some tutoring in calculus that allowed him to make it to vet school, or so he has told me.
