Red face Help with ID for a first-timer

Hey, first time poster here. Lurking pretty heavily for the past 7-8 months, had been planning on waiting till I could get a decent temporary setup and buy some tosai from a reputable location... that is, until I was in Petsmart and saw this "black koi" all by itself trying desperately to get into the adjacent koi tanks. After getting permission from the wife, I grabbed this little guy and a friend in an adjacent tank and whisked them away from their life of solitude in an overstocked tank. They're still in a tank for now, but they'll soon (as in, within the next few weeks) be in a 400 gallon above ground pond (that will later be upgraded).

I know they're probably not ever going to be show quality, but they've got spunk.

Both are about 2-2.5" in length.

Maybe a karasugoi/magoi (are those the same thing? Google has certainly been unrevealing). I think the white one is maruten kohaku of some variety, and has a pretty sheen to 'em, too; not sure what to make of a fin with hi on it though, outside of excluding it from being tancho.

Thanks for letting me pick ya'll's brains!

      Black one = Karasugoi

Red/White = Kohaku with an extreme fault of color on the tail. Typical of what you get at Petsmart. Just keep any eye on them for health issues. Petsmart and the like are notorious for unhealthy fish conditions.

Awesome! Thank you so much. Keeping them in a warmed (~78 degree) tank for quarantine at the moment.

I'm debating about prophylactically treating them (one friend who is an aquarist does so), but I'm not a fan of tossing random chemicals in there with them when so far, they're acting normally. Hopefully the daily water changes (and ammonia management while their tank is cycling) will be enough.

Don't treat with anything until you have a problem. They're better off with what you're doing.

I'm not qualified in the slightest to judge anything BUT I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who purchased a black koi from Petsmart. I love my little guy! Lovely fish.
