      Koi Breeding

Can anyone point me to a Koi Breeding guide or list of what I'll need to breed?

I have a pond, but could I use a tank?

Welcome and thanks for joining Koiphen!

Until the experts can reply there's a "sticky" at the top of the forum with dozens of examples of breeding setups... here's a link
to some great reading there too:

Welcome Sparkie. There is a wealth of information in the links in the posting that Steve mentioned. As you can see from that, there are a lot of different ways that people who post here breed koi. Most pair up one of their best females with one to three males of compatible varieties and let them spawn in a separate container such as a 300 gallon or so tub/stock tank or a separate pond from their main pond. Then they move the adults back to the main pond.

You will need spawning material that they can attach their eggs to such as spawning ropes which you can make out of nylon rope or spawning brushes that you can buy. You will need a way to clean the water where the fry are being raised (water changes, flow through, or separate filter). I do the spawning, hatching, & raising all in a separate 1800 gallon pond with an established filter that runs year-round, but most folks use other methods.

Methods folks use is often influenced by their goals and resources. Some are very serious and want to breed show quality koi or a new line of rare or unique variety. Some just want to raise a few mutt babies. And there's everything in between. Some have small ponds with limited space, while others have several farm ponds, and everything in between. If you tell us more about what you have (pond size, set up, type and size of adult koi you want to breed, space available) and what your goals are, some folks here may be able to give you more specific tips. Good luck!
