    Showa Tosai

    Hello everyone,

Been a while since I posted - but I wanted to ask for opinions on this Showa Tosai that I've purchased. Just to give a sense of scale, it's about 8-9" in length, and probably a bit on the thin side due to the trip from Japan to Canada. Sorry about the glare on the water. I realize that doesn't help in the evaluation.

Come on, folks. This isn't the correct procedure!

The correct order of operation is:

    i) I post a sub-par fish.

ii) Koiman tells me how awful it is.

iii) I make an excuse such as "It's difficult to purchase good Tosai here in Canada".

iv) THEN you come along and make some jokes.

See, we've skipped the critical part. Where is Koiman anyways?

Here is another pic - though again, apologies for the quality of the shot.

I'd go get other shots right now, but I had to leave this Showa at the dealer because the dealer's water temperature was significantly warmer in his indoor water than my outdoor pond where there has been significant cold rain in the last few days. I didn't want to subject the fish to such a dramatic temperature change.

I can, however, update these shots as soon as the situation allows (next week, if Spring would be so kind as to arrive).

Note the reason I didn't post this picture originally is that it is a bit blurry, but also a ripple in the water is causing a bit of distortion. So, I think any value in this picture is colour only. I believe you can see some more of the sumi and beni that will/should come up.

For me go with your gut feel,it's going to be a CRACKER with that head pattern.

Body looks robust ready to start filling out.

Must be the most attractive of the bunch or why would it be in the spot light.

Sumi is nicely balanced. Left and right down the length.

The bits and pieces of white are nicely dispersed.

Hi looks looks strong along the length.

Okay, I have brought the Showa home and had a chance to snap a couple pics that are quite a bit closer and hopefully a lot more clear for evaluation purposes. The focus for me at the moment is getting this new fellow some good quality food to bulk him up. He seems to be quite a tall Showa and possibly has a lot of room to grow.

Well, you asked for it!lol There's no where near enough shiroji on this fish especially on the shoulder/head/face. It is quite malnourished which, hopefully you can help with, but being a male I doubt seriously that it will fill out enough to look imposing when grown out. I also wouldn't count on it getting much more than about 20-22" in size. I do agree, the beni is homogenous throughout, but the quality appears to be a bit "hard". Sumi will change dramatically on this one so enjoy that part of the ride. Oh, and remember, you asked me!lol

    As per the plan:

"Koiman, it's difficult to purchase good quality tosai here in Canada".

But thank you, I do agree on the Shiroji part in particular - we'll have to see if any more balance is gained as it grows.

I do understand your problems getting better quality fish in Canada, but there are ways, I'm sure of that. It'll just depend on your budget! I will always provide you with the most honest feedback based on the pic/fish posted. How else can someone learn other than spending the money FIRST and then waiting while a miracle grows out of a dandelion?!?

There is the possibility that this collector does not care for the modern kindai showa.

If I want Shiroji I buy a Kohaku or Sanke.

If I want a Showa I buy hi and sumi with the two colours broken at intervals with evenly placed shiroji.

I understand koi keeping keeping is all about bright white.

    Horses for courses.

It is about the "QUALITY" of the white ground, as much as it is about the quality of all the colors in a set variety. Understanding koi keeping is so much more than being all about "bright white"! And "evenly placed" is much different from strategically "balanced". Of course, the basic requirement of a really good quality fish is, first and foremost, body conformation. Pattern is always last in judging large fish at a show. Small fish, like this, it is more about the skin/color quality and then the pattern. but, I digress...

Oh and it has nothing to do with being a Kindai or older style, this is still not a real high quality fish. It still needs a larger area of shiroji on the shoulder. That's a distinct difference from being a Kindai!

Just for the record, I prefer a traditional Showa. The Kindai type remind me too much of a Sanke, so I'd just rather have a traditional Showa and a Sanke.
