I noticed one of our koi about 14" long has what looks like a scab on its back about the size of a nickle. What should i do? I haven't been able to catch him and would like to doctor on him when i do.

Being that this thread is in the ER section, can we please refrain from posts like these? If you don't know, please don't respond and definitely, please don't make light of someone's situation.
As to the OP, I agree with Steve, a pic is necessary, but it sounds like it might actually be an ulcerated area that is infected.

That has many of the earmarks of a heron strike. You were lucky if that is what it is, as they have a tendency to hit the spine which kills the fish, or they come up with the fish and eat it. I can't tell if it is inflamed reddened indicating it is infected, but it is definitely in need of watching. Personally, I would play wait and see, to see if the fish immune system will take care of it or if I would need to be more aggressive. I think I would get some Tricide Neo on hand in case it inflames. For that you will also need some clove oil or MS-222 to sedate the koi during treatment.

Keep your words sweet. You never know when you may have to eat them.

Have never seen anything attack the fish, but anything can happen. I don't think we have any herons in these parts? It looks like a scab to me slightly raised bad has been the same for maybe a week. Of course it's the wildest one of the bunch.
Doesn't seem to be red but kind of hard to tell with his color.
It doesn't seem to be "red" as in an infection or ulcer. It looks like some type of whitish film over the orange and black skin. It's still really hard to diagnose based on the pic provided from in the pond. If you could possibly remove the fish and place it in a large container of sorts to allow a clear/clean pic of the fish and the infected area.
