Please take a look at my Sieve design/ Build. Updatedm

☆☆☆This turned into more of a build thread, originally it was a pvc design, but I switched to Stailess Steel. See the pics in the posts below☆☆☆

Here's a design I just drew up. It will be sealed so I can use it above water level and pre pump. I'm planning on using .5" pvc to make it and It will be plumbed like a zakki sieve, I didn't draw in the ports for the waste and pump yet, not sure where I want them. There are 4 4" inlet ports, im not sure if I want to do flanges or not. The cover will be lexan and bolt on. The sieve I already have is 36"x 24" and was spec'd out to be able to filter 200 micron and flow 10k gallons per hour, not that the filter will actually do that.

Please let me know if you see any potential problems, or have any suggestions.

      I hope the attachment works.

No expert, but the angle of the screen looks to be a bit steep. Check the angle shown in this thread:

The company I bought the wedge wire from said to put it at a 60 deg angle. I started drawing it a year ago, I will look into it though, Im no expert either.

If your building it out of sheet pvc I'd recommend reinforcing it with something to keep it from bowing. I just built an rdf in the diy section named my own spin at the rdf if you want to see how I used pvc strips on all edges for rienforcing. Just primer and glue and clamp it in place just like normal pvc fittings. Works great. Good luck with your build

Thanks, this is my first attempt at working with pvc, other than pipe. Hopefully the sheets I ordered will come in pretty soon. In the mean time I ordered a small piece on amazon to cut up and play with. The inside of the box will have things running across it, so I was thinking that would help with the strength. I guess the giod thing with the pvc is you can always glue on more pieces to strengthen it. My friend has a shop with a big table saw and cnc router table, so hopefully I can get everything nice and square. I did see you drum filter build, Im going to look at it again for sure. Thanks again.

Yea pvc sheet is just like pipe. Just use a lot of glue and it won't go anywhere. Super strong bond

I thought your name sounded familiar in the other thread, and I had forgotten about this build. That screen is HUUUUUGGGGGEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! The screen in the 24" Zakki Sieve is only 18" wide x 12" tall and it flows 9,000 GPH. Then again I did specially design that sieve screen to use the smallest V wires available so there is the greatest open area possible, but your max flow rate should be able to handle more than 10k GPH. A straight screen is great for simplicity, but you will get better water flow results with a curved screen so you may try finding a metal fab shop nearby that has a slip roller with at least 3" diameter rollers.
If this was my project and I had that expensive piece of wedge wire screen, then i would cut it into two screens 24" wide x 18" tall and make two filters. All of the water will pass through the screen within 18" anyways so the remaining 18" of your screen is just wasted space.

I am glad you decided to go with SS as the filter body because a square/rectangular PVC body wouldn't work. It will get sucked in on the straight sides and the screen would never fit properly. I went through quite a few designs and rebuilds before I got to the rock solid Zakki Sieve design which has proven itself over the last 6 years. I probably could have built you a custom Zakki Sieve for less than this project is going to end up costing you, but you wouldn't have the sweat equity in it.

      Good luck,
      Zac

How do you adjust the flow? My sieves have floating weirs. Without a floating weir or similar.... the sieve stops when the water level drops below the top of the screen.

He is making a direct suction sieve like the Zakki Sieve. No moving parts, which means the spillway has to be installed above pond water level.

Zac, I actually did cut the screen in half already and made the box smaller. It's not going to cost me very much to build. The sieve was $300, and I cut it in half. I found ss clamps for $10 each and put 14 on it, so that $140 A few sheets of ss is going to be $500 or so. I have some pretty neat parts designed for the ports. I just need to figure out how high to put the outlets that go to the pumps and I can laser cut the body.

I have a .25" ss lid cut and i'm putting a 3/8" lexan window in it. I had stuff laying around at work for that.

Is there a dump that works better for pulling water? I want to go with 2 efficient pumps. Just 1 for now and a second when I make the pond bigger. I think the spillway on the sieve will end up being a little under 4' above pond water level. It will feed a 32" side port bead filter, dual valves and them a few showers or moving beds.

I tried to get one of the used sieves you sold a few weeks back and missed out. That got me motivated to work on this project again.

A little bit of progress, the lid with the lexan window and studs, and the sieve screen with a handle i welded in the top edge so it's easy to remove.

I also ordered an esbb10500 pump from Birdman to use with the sieve. Probably going to run a bunch of sand gravel filters and a few stainless showers with it. Thats the plan this week at least.

That's a great filtration system right there. Super sieve to clean all the junk out of the water, SG filters to polish and showers to finish off with massive bio conversion.

Looks awesome. Where did you get the seive screen from. I’m wanting to build a blown up version seive for my new pond build as well. What’s the dimensions of that screen

BDI screens is where I got the screen. It was 24 wide and 36" long, I cut it in half, so 24x18" now.
