Showa X Tancho Showa X Platinum Ogon 2017 Spawn

So excited, my fish are in the middle of breeding! I noticed some 'fishy' activity and moved in the spawning material and sure enough within 10mins there were bunches of eggs... Ill track there progress on this forum... There still breeding but im going to keep an eye on them till they stop.

I bought some decapsulated brine shrimp eggs for when i feed them i also made a sort of 'drink' as well. I took some minnows i raised, a piece of bologna and freezed mosquito larva and cooked them with a propane torch. Then i put them in a bag and mashed all the juices together with my hands through the outside of the closed bag, then drained out the juices which left me with this ugly brownish liquid that has tiny particles of fish, bologna and mosquito lava. I also crushed up and mixed in afterwards freeze dried bloodworms... Hopefully this will be a nice extra treat for the fry.

Will there be a few regular showa and utsuri mixed in too you think? Since both males are regular.

Some time I'd like to further research the topic of the metallic gene being dominant, and get others' thoughts from their experiences. But, I think you may get either all metallic (hikari) or half metallic and half non-metallic, depending on the female's genetics. It depends upon the female, not because she's female, but because she is metallic.

The presentation below indicates that the metallic trait (versus non-metallic) is controlled by one gene pair, where the metallic gene is dominant, and the non-metallic gene is recessive.
      http://www.koi-bito.com/forum/attach...i-genetics.pdf
So IF it is really that simple, that would mean that your showa males each have two recessive genes and your platinum female has either one or two dominant genes. If she has two, then all of the offspring will be metallic. If she has one dominant and one recessive gene, then half the offspring will be metallic and half will be non-metallic.

I once bred a metallic female with 4 males (2 metallic, 2 non-metallic). Once I got the numbers reduced to 15-20, I recall they were all metallic. (I do not recall if there were any non-metallics among the hundreds.) In retrospect, I think that particular female must have two dominant genes.

Please keep us posted on how your percentages come out.

Very interesting! A day after the eggs were laid we had a day were the temps were mid 60s... and the night was upper 40s... I think the pond where the eggs are is getting to cold as its been 3 days and the eggs have no development inside despite them being fertelized-yellow color. HOWEVER! the males sitll appear to be following her like they were before they bred so im hoping for a re-spawn as she still looks a little eggy.

Actually, some of the eggs are good as i can see fry inside some of the eggs... so adorable lol. They appear to be yellow/white in color so im guessing this particular one is not a showa of any kind as i believe showa are born black(?)

Bases on my previous egg hatches, im guessing this one will hatch within 24hrs... I tried getting a picture but it is like... impossible.

I think showa, utsuri, and their metallic versions would appear black or at least medium to dark gray for the first few weeks. I think the yellow ones could wind up being anything else, including kohaku, shiro muji, aka muji, hariwake, platinum, etc.

I saw from a thread a while back of a kohaku spawn and the fry were yellow and the person said: Kohaku and aka muji are yellow and the shiro muji are white... but that was a kohaku spawn but i would imagine the platinum ogons would be white aswell.. time will tell!
