Sprout? Lotuses when they start growing will send up floating pads first. These pads are usually only about the size of a half dollar at first but will grow larger. After a while, aerial pads will start growing. Sometimes the first small floating pads will die, but more pads will come up if the plant is not disturbed. I suggest just leaving the plant alone and see if additional pads will show over the next week or two. Make sure it is getting plenty of sunlight.

And bonus! My seeds from this year have produced their first floating leaf!!!! Hurray!
I really need to swap out the water tonight though!

First time posting pictures, so hope I'm doing it properly. I've ordered pond tabs, so am anxious to receive them and everything up in the outdoor barrels.

Nice! Though you could at least give those each their own cup for now.

Lots of growth worth this warm weather we've been having, I'll get mine in soil this weekend.

I put each seed / plant, in it's own cup I went back and read last year's grow out thread and it seemed like many waited until late April / early May, to place them outside.

Our weather is up and down, in the 80's, then cooler temps expected. Am I hurting them, delaying putting them outside? Also, will sand work as a planting medium, or should it be yard dirt. I don't really have a place I can dig up...I do have some plain potting soil.

    Thanks!

Based on my research here (especially Matherfish's site, thanks!!!) it seems that lotus are heavy feeders. I'd prefer not to use fertilizer if possible, especially since my property is in a river watershed. Would compost teas, fish emulsion other more natural fertilizers work, or are tabs really the only way to go?

If your pots are in your pond you would not want to use those. If the lotus are in tubs that are not in ponds you can use whatever you want to use. Just remember they love fertilizer.

Hmmm....some of my leaves are quite red in color. Is this just too much sun, too soon?

It is probably more related to temperatures. Have you had some cool nights lately?
How are the plants coming along, everyone? Looking for an update.

Sorry guys, I'm out of the grow out I had a chance to travel with my husband to CA, spur of the moment. I had a lot to do to get ready to go and make pet arrangements etc. The weather forecast wasn't good ( we had 30 degrees this past Monday !) so I left them inside in their cups....came home to ickiness

I'm sorry...I'll have to live vicariously through this thread!

I'm slacking this time. I haven't potted mine yet since I started way late then they were in my garage for a long time with not enough light. the NN started to sprout but the leaf never broke free. the other ones started growing roots just this week and need to go in dirt. I've got two of Cindy's and two of Frank's. unfortunately I no longer know which are which. I only started the five seeds, so I definitely shouldn't be asking for any in 2018.

On a higher note, the two from 2016 I garaged over winter are coming back nicely. I divided one and left the other one as is.

Not from seed, but from this year's tuber division! This first lotus bloom of 2017 actually came on a lotus that ha been divided back in early March, and the tubers were floating in water up until about two weeks ago when t was planted. The buds were already on the plant when we planted it up. Last week I planted up three more tubers/plants that also had already put on buds. I still have more plants that I will pot up. We had had a bad storm just before the pic was taken.

The cold snap we had the last month or so really set mine back. I probably lost half the plants, hopefully the rest ate able to recover. How is everyone else doing?
