      sterilizing pond water

I am beside a mountain stream in northern nsw australia. I am building a mud pond and i want to use the stream water to refresh the pond.
The water is clear and we use it for drinking. Should I sterilize the stream water (with an above ground pool with chlorine) before putting the water into the mud pond to kill any parasites etc.

I don't think that that is necessary. A continuous flow through would be the best possible situation for the koi, but due to the restrictions in Australia about keeping, importing, etc, I would be more concerned with sterilizing the outflowing water to be sure that no spawn get into the stream.

Thank you for your comments, the mud pond will only be used for grow out etc. and drained every year.

      Totally agree

I've used untreated mountain river water for 16 years for my koi ponds with no problems.

Hello I wonder if I can use water from the river in the koi pond for weekly change of water 20%.

I am afraid to bring parasites to the pond with river water
it is enough to drop the water through the uv light 55w before the discharge in pond?
or the water should be treated in the ozone chamber before releasing it into the pond
      What do you thing?

Go online and research your UV unit. There will be flow rates for clarification v sterilization. The UV lights we buy are generally used to kill agea which takes significantly less energy (Time) than sterilizing water completely. As long as you flow the stream water through the unit at sterilization flow rates, it should be fine.

The following is an example of the specs you might see for a unit ( this one is 40 watt)
      MAX FLOW RATE
(USED AS CLARIFIER) Up To 3,000 Gph
      MAX POND SIZE
(USED AS STERILIZER) Up To 2,000 Gph

Analysis of the water in question is the only way to know for certain if and what type of treatment is needed.

If the stream is that close the parasites will probably already be in the pond thanks to nature. Frogs, birds, etc which travel to both will bring them.

Only somewhat true. In my area you will find higher concentrations of undesirables in creek or river water. Very few pristine natural sources left. Very rare to find a fish farm that doesn't use a well beside the source or use some type of filtration or treatment. We use creek water to fill mud ponds but it gets filtered through 20 feet of sand and gravel (non potable shallow well).
