Buying Koi Online - Best sites for quality koi

The new 5000 gallon pond is just completed and we have room for 4-6 more koi. We want the rest of the koi to be of high quality fish and just don't know the best places to buy 1 or 2 year old excellent quality koi online for reasonable prices (Like $100-200 each or so is my definition of reasonable price). Prefer Japanese but not necessary. Any suggestions?

I have found Kodama to be a bit over priced for the quality of what they offer. I would check out what Russ from PSKoi has as he currently appears to have a decent number of Tosai up for sale now in his buying trip thread on his forum. Beyond that I would look at Benni Hanna Nishikigoi, Genki, and Nishikigoi.com

Overall, I have been pleased with the quality of my Kodama purchases. Every fish has been healthy, and quality met expectations based on the photos on their website. You can sometimes time it so that you buy one of their fish on Ebay, which includes free shipping, and then buy a couple more fish on their own auction website. They will include the website fish with the Ebay shipment, so you don't pay additional shipping. This can save over $100 .
Of course, they inflate the price of the Ebay fish to offset the free shipping, but I think some careful shopping can still allow you to save some money. You've got to be a little lucky, too, as you may be bidding with others for the same fish, which will drive the price up further.

Be sure to read JR's koi classifications on page 7.

Maybe with pictures; but I stopped buying koi from pictures long ago. Find a dealer close by or build a relationship with a dealer so they keep a look-out for that "special" koi you're looking for.

So, as it has spoken, nothing beats "hands-on and in person.

The best fishes in my pond cost $0.00. I have several Best in Variety winners they all cost $0.00. If you have a good pond, and for that matter if you don’t, "koi will be given unto you", more than you could want. And you in turn will give away koi as well. If you are a koi club member I can pretty much guarantee you that other members will happily give you fish that were you to buy them would cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. For example for the upcoming CFKS 2017 I will bring three fish given to me (by MikeM, KimH, and somebody I can’t remember). I would be surprised if all three did not merit some recognition.

Which brings up another point: go to a show.

I have bought from Kodama several times over the years, without exception the fish I got were better than the photo represented. This spring I will spawn one of these, a favorite of everyone, a ginrin soragoi girl with one of Russ’s Sakai showa, what fun (and more fish to give away).

Check out the Texas Koi & Fancy Goldfish Society. They usually have a Spring event with imported koi brought in by dealers. When getting koi priced below, say, $200, I really think it best to see in person. With more costly koi, relying on a well-regarded, truly experienced dealer is not as crazy as it may sound... if you are able to make clear what you are wanting. My most recent acquisition was a Sanke I had not seen even in a photo until I was told what I was getting, which is crazy except I was getting her from Mat McCann and he knows what I like after providing me with koi for over a dozen years. Relying on photos alone is never a good way to go, unless pattern is all you care about.... and nothing wrong with that, but you may not care for how the body develops after a couple of years. In regard to relying on just photos, living in an area where there are no quality dealers, I did that ... to my regret as often as not. I do not anymore. I would rather rely on a dealer I know well than on a photo.

+1 for Zac and Pan Intercorp.

Doesn't hurt that it's only about 30 min. from my house too.
