      Question Orchid Question

I finally got my orchid to grow a flower spike....and then I accidentally broke it off trying to hang it up in the patio. There is still about half of the spike connected to the plant, but the other half where the growing tip is is completely detached.

First question: Will the remaining half of the spike grow a new tip, or will it die off? What if I put rooting hormone on the tip (I know does not make sense but you never know)

Second question: Can I get the severed spike that has the growing tip to root if I use rooting hormone?

The half attached to the plant may shoot out another spike from the next node. The part that detached is done.

If it is a phalaenopsis you might get it to rebloom on the same spike, instructions here:

      http://www.matsuinursery.com/reblooming.html

Otherwise, you will probably need to wait for next year.

If it is a Phalaenopsis orchid, leave the spike alone and it may re-bloom. The part that broke off is dead and just throw it away. Also the plant may put up a second spike.

Okay, thanks everyone. Yes, it is a Phalaenopsis.

Here is a picture showing a new bud growing from a node at a location below where the old shoot was cut on one I snipped about 2 weeks ago.

Wow, that's cool! How long for the new spike to grow buds?

I'll post when it happens, as long as I don't knock the new spike off in the interim!

The first bud is finally opening! The second stem has also rebudded, but is quite a bit behind the first one.

So, the first bloom finally started to fail after the re-bloom. They lasted quite a while!

Very pretty! I was given one that was on full bloom with about 15 blooms on it in January. The last bloom fell of last week! Eight months it was in bloom for me. Not sure when it bloomed out at the nursery. It had two stems. So far both are still alive. Most of mine stay in bloom for 5 to 7 months.

Wow! I thought they only bloomed for 1-2 months!
