      Please help!!

I've been having my Koi for almost 8+ years and this is the first time that any of them have gotten sick . Can anyone tell me what is on my Koi's skin/scales? and perhaps how to treat it? I have a total of 14 Koi in my pond and this one is the only one suffering or being affected by this condition. A couple of years ago one of my fan tail Kois was suffering from tail rot but that was relieved by a complete water change. I did another complete water change to see if it would help the condition if this Koi but it did not work. Help please!!!!!!

That looks like a cancerous growth or tumor. I don't know that there's much that can be done. It appears to be rather advanced. Also, this didn't happen overnight. How long has it been this way?

Well, I noticed it like 6 months ago and I thought that the scales were changing color cause the pond doesn't offer much shade and there is lots of sun exposure. She acts normal, her behavior is not out of the ordinary. I did a complete water change thinking it would help but it hasn't. Also though that it could be bacterial so I've been looking perhaps to isolate and treat. Not really sure which route to go.

If that's Hikui, its pretty bad. https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...-Is-this-Hikui

Duncan has a good article. Some think its cancer related, like a skin cancer from sun, some don't http://www.koiquest.co.uk/Hikui.htm

I'd have to be on the "I don't believe" side of the sun issue but it's always possible. Not every human develops cancer either but the ones that do come in many forms. This is MOST LIKELY NOT Hikui.

Tail rot? Tell us about your pond. Size, gallons, how many fish, added any fish. Poor water quality can cause problems.

It's a good picture but I can't tell if its on the skin or if its coming out from the inside. Almost looked like it was open and ulcerated and something started growing in it.

I respectfully disagree. My very nice showa years ago came down with this look. It was diagnosed as hikui by Griffith and other well respected koi enthusiasts. Also while I am at it, hikui is NOT beni specific. More rumours in the koi world.

Okay Kirk, I edited my earlier post. The first two links show the same article about the nine koi. I will admit, at first site I looked at this as "possibly" being hikkui. While I've had a couple fish get it, it looked nothing like this massive growth/tumor that this fish displays. While there happens to be some sumi within the hi pattern here, I don't think it's relative. Even the articles only dance around the issue of it bleeding into other colors, but the only other color mentioned was "white".

My real concern is that this fish exhibited some of this SIX MONTHS PRIOR. Why wait until it's this advanced to seek assistance. Kinda like the horse already left the barn. This one should most likely need to be euthanized.

My koi had this exactly. And was hikui. It took some months to get worse but it continued.

So, who told you that's what it was? Just curious as I've never seen hikkui this advanced!

      Griffith

The thread below shows some pretty bad looking cases.

Okay, I will retract what I said earlier. Those pics of a and b are very relative to the pic in this thread. Good catch. As I said, I had never seen it displayed this badly/grossly. Usually it's localized smaller "blister type" lesions and it's always on the beni.

Here is a pic of mine in the (earlier) stages. I had many emails with Duncan and he asked me if he could use this pic. Of course I said yes. Also found on koromos as well. And yes it starts in the red but well move into the white.

More disfiguring and unsightly, you can scrap them and treat , but will be a constant to keep at bay. Most likely become to much of a burden and either rehome or deal with it .

Im by no means an expert in koi disease... but ive treated for bacterial problems and all sorts of parasitic infestations successfully. I do study human health though. All animals can get cancer, and regardless of this being "hikkui" or not, that is a cancer. You have new, nonfunctional, undeveloped tissue growing at the expense of the healthy tissue. Also, it is highly vascularized. I would euthanize. In order to stave this you would have to excise all the cancerous tissue, which imho would be inhumane. And that would probably bleed a lot.

Agreed , have to be scraped, bleeds , then cauterize. Comes back and will. Repeat . I've seen people do it for years but it's a huge bear and hard on the fish
