      Rescued Tortoise

I noticed a flock of crows in the corner of the property and didn't think much of it because it is the horse's 'outhouse' area, and it is not unusual to see birds going through her offerings looking for seed. They were so persistent, that after awhile, I thought i'd walk over and check on them and saw they had this young tortoise on his back and were trying to find a chink in his armor.

The tortoise appears to be unharmed, so I'll release it tomorrow....but I now have a better understand as to why a flock of crows is also called a murder of crows. < g >

Is that a tortoise or a box turtle? Beautiful animal, whichever it is! When you release it, take it as close to where you found it as possible, sans crows, of course.

The little critter is one of our native gophers ( Gopherus polyphemus ), actually they range along the gulf coast, and I think might make it into La as well. I walked it home a short while ago; looked in the area where I first noticed the crows and found a burrow about his size and I left it there. Went back a little later and he was sitting at the mouth of the burrow, looking quite content.

At this point, development hasn't come to our area and we still have a heathy population of gophers. We also have a heathy population and I feed some that have been neutered and released......caught this tortoise joining them for an afternoon snack. Him I recognize from his shell and have been watching him grow for 8 yrs, or so, now. When he first showed he still had his egg tooth.

      Thank you for saving him.

Are these tortoise that get huge?

Where do you live? I'm in Louisiana and I've never seen one with that type of shell.

I hate crows. When I raised ducks, geese and chickens, I'd have to shoot one every week and hang it from the fence to keep them from stealing the eggs. They won't come around if there's one dead. They wait until about 3 days before the eggs are to hatch. The baby chicks start peeping in the shell and the crows crack the shell, kill them and eat them. It's disgusting.
