      These 2 clumps of bananas

These are the 2 clumps I got from my old neighbor sometime late spring. I did not get them in the ground for a wile but still they have grown pretty good. These are Orinoco Bananas grown in South Florida for years. My old neighbor is in her 80 and lives about 30 miles away now. She was married to my Moms cousin until he died in his 80s he was a bit older than she was but she might ne in her 90s not sure. She has been leaving them out the last few years since she is too old too care for them. They are in nook in front of her house so they are pretty protected. I wont leave mine out since that is how I lost mine too start with. These get really big. What I will do is dig up the clump and cut the leaves off and stand them in a corner on the back porch. So they will not be cut too the ground. so next year they will just get bigger. They get so big I wont be able too move them myself. They are really almost that big now. The smaller one is supposed too be a basoo and I will leave that one out and hope it comes back. The banana I left out last year did not winter over but I dont know what variety it was. These do have bananas but they are small about six inches or so.

I hope they make it for you. I had to give up on growing red bananas because I don't have the room inside to overwinter them.

Nancy that Andrew Leonard from Charlotte that you see on alocasia planet even leaves his Ae Ae outside. I have heard the red ones are easy outside too. Just cut them down before frost and mulch heavy with leaves. maybe put a wire fence around them and fill it up if you read on Brians Botanicals it shows you what too do in zone 6. I posted it on Koiphen once but could not find it again too bump

Does he cut the Ae Ae back and mulch with a wire cage? I know several types of Palm trees grow very well here too.

I believe those are what I have. They over winter fine. I had the tiny bananas one time. We even had a freak ice storm once and they came back. We've had several floods where they have sat in deep water for weeks and survived.

I have had bananas before. Usually here it takes a few years before they are large enough too produce. When my greenhouse was brand new I planted one in the ground next too my orchid display which was a whole driftwood tree with spanish moss and orchids in it. Well I came home from work and the top of banana was cut off laying in the floor. My dad was ****** beyond words. The leaf stalk had punched and hole through both layers of the top of the greenhouse. He made me climb too the top of a 16 foot step ladder too patch the top. He knew I was scared the death of heights.
