      Three Bloom Night

There is not much more enjoyable than getting to the nursery before dawn and getting the wonderful whiff of pineapple that tells you the Vic blossoms had opened. There were three to deal with this morning....one ama and two cruz, which adds up to three pods; one ama and two 'Longwood Hybrid'.

I've been growing Vics for maybe fifteen years now and while these are not lilies you can plant, forget about and still get blooms, I am still awed by the plants and feel the modicum of effort required is well rewarded with amazing pads and stunning blooms. I don't think anyone walks away from a Vic pond unimpressed and unmoved....which is why public gardens use them as a draw.

Cmon, give it a go next spring! Nothing better than smelling a bloom you grew yourself. You're a talented grower, I bet you can figure out a way to make it happen up there.

I understand the space issues, I'm in the same boat. I don't have room for all the varieties I have to fully grow and bloom as it is now.

Five or six years ago I tried to grow one in my koi pond and despite the thorns the koi almost destroyed it in a couple days. This was in spring so it wasn't a huge plant when I brought it home from Craigs but I never thought the fish would mess with it like they did. I quickly moved it into the lily pond and it dominated one end for several months and provided many blooms.

I'll never forget the first bloom. I was sitting in the pool about 10 or 11 PM and smelled an intense pineapple aroma. Puzzled on it for a bit and then the light went on in my brain and I jumped out of the pool and grabbed a flashlight to see the first bloom as it was opening.

Craig holds these plants in high regard for good reason. Given the room, proper feeding and the willingness to see the blooms at night or very early morning, I'm not sure there is a more majestic addition to your pond that I could think of. The pads are special themselves and the progression of the blooms is definitely something to see and experience!

I don't know how many times I've looked at my lily pond and planned to tear it out and expand it significantly so I could grow vics in the middle and trops all around. I have a ton of bamboo to remove first but I'm still not ruling it out.

Thanks all....as fall arrives the seed harvest has begun. The bags are from two 'Longwood Hybrid' pods that ruptured last night; the clean seed from a LH pod collected a few nights ago. Have to say that cleaning the arils off is a slimy, smelly process!

I guess I will go on record again as offering free seed, but for reasons I can't fathom, no one ever seems up for the challenge. I have already started making plans for next season...the conservation of Victoria lines is important and while I am working with a couple public gardens to insure purity and genetic diversity....once word got out into the commercial sector that I had no plans to grow Vics last year, the mongrel cruziana and F2 Longwood seedlings began to appear. It always saddens and discourages me that, after so many years of valuable information and true to type stock being available out there, the scamsters are still afoot. They see only dollar signs and have no regard for even trying to sell true to type lilies...heck they'll ship any lily red, blue, white, or..... yellow to you as the named one requested. They seem incapable of saying 'I don't have that particular cultivar you requested, but I do have such and such, which is also pretty'.

Maybe they are color blind and miss the beauty of a specific lily because they only see "green"

Glad you're reconsidering this, I think it's something you'll always remember as well.

Will do, Matt. Pods are ripening about every day, so saving some for you won't be a problem. And they don't actually "need" a lot of room...they are just more impressive the larger they get. Here is a 'Longwood Hybrid' seedling I forgot I'd left in a stock tank in mid-August. Put on some nice size for being in a 4" pot. < g >

Thanks Craig. Pardon my ignorance but do they bloom the same hours as nightbloomers? I see photos of daytime vic blooms in other places and i get confused.

Vics do have a slightly different bloom cycle than other night bloomer......for one, the bloom opens only for two nights and the second night it is often submerged by midnight....so it is more a day and a half bloom. Other than that....pretty much normal. The flower is pollen receptive the first night and dehisces pollen the second.....which leads to the annoying description that it "changes" sex and is female the first night and male the second. Ugh! That pattern is so common in bisexual aka "perfect " flowers, I have no idea why the Vics were singled out to be described this way.

The first night bloom does stay open til 9 am or so, but the second night is long gone by then. And as I am an early to bed person, that is why I rarely get photos of the second night bloom .....that and I emasculate the blooms and butchers blooms just ain't pretty. < g > Might try for some second night photos when we cool down....like the other night bloomers, the cold temps keep even the second night flower open late into the morning.
