      My Garden thread.

I thought I would start Thread of how my garden is doing.

These are just pics of the crops in the high tunnel, I will get some of the rest of the garden tomorrow.

The tomatoes are a little droopy, they just got pruned.

I put a clipboard next to the broccoli so you can have a idea on how big they have gotten.

Why do you have them in a greenhouse?

I checked, and they have only been in for just over 4 weeks. It is an easy 10 degrees warmer in there on a cloudy day, so the plants grow much faster, leading to earlier production. It will also add at least a month to the beginning and the end of the season, even though it is unheated. There are lots of great advantages to growing produce in high tunnels.

Are you growing the vegetables for self sustaining personal use or for retail? Your greenhouse looks very professional.

A high tunnel (also called a hoop house, or poly house. ) is pretty much a greenhouse that is unheated, and is cooled only using natural ventilation and shade cloth, no evaporator coolers. The crop is also planted stray into the ground. They are designed to extend your growing season a few months for crops like peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and so on. But I should be able to grow cold season crops like kale, and chois.

Personal use, retail, wholesale, or whatever makes money! LOL I know some one with two grocery stores that said they would buy whatever I have to spare, and I also have some other really good selling options.

Here are the potatoes and onions. I haven't had a chance to get it very much of it mulched yet, it keeps raining just enough to keep it muddy.

      I know that's right!
It really opens up when you can work in the garden, I can work in there when it is windy or rainy, and it is nice out I can go hiking or something.

The lower garden (with the potatoes) is mostly rainfall, but they can be water with sprinklers if I have to. We are watering the high tunnel with a water wand for now, once I get up a little bit of money, I will instal a drip tape set up. We are also setting up system to catch rain water off the high tunnel, house, and shed so we can water with that. Nothing beats rainwater.

It has been about a month since the guy from NRCS came out to look it over, so the reimbursement money should be coming. I hope! LOL

We set up rainbarrels to collect water off the roof and from the gutters. They get filled quick with one downpour here in Florida. The plants like it much better than hose water. I use it to water my potted plants and fill my stock tanks when they are low. A co-worker was the one that told me as you have noticed that the plants grow better with the rainwater. Not sure where I heard of using rain barrels from....maybe it was here on KP or another forum.

I was going to post fresh pics today, but didn't get the time. I work in the morning, and then spent all afternoon pruning and tying up tomatoes. So I will get the pics posted tomorrow.
