I don't see this media as a sale item on your website. Are the tube type media still available?

How long has this product been in the US hobbyist's filters? Has there been any reported problems of it breaking apart and "melting" like some other media?

I've had it since Tom first offered it for sale No issues no problems and I've bought more since.

No "melting" issue with 2 year old Seaside media.

3 year old cermedia is the same shower is crumbling.

its one of the best for your money.

Dont give into the hype of cermedia, they will break or the chance of them breaking is very high.

Lava rock does not break down, is inexpensive and works very well. But there is no profit in it so it is not marketed.

When I first saw the CerMedia product many years ago at a koi show. I question its performance in the long run and for the most part kept it to myself as the experts were all over on how great it is . It is over exaggerated in some ways by the manufacturer and over priced imo.
The world is always. BUYER BEWARE. The longer the product is on the market. The more postings of issues arise with this product or how well it continues to work. This is true on many things purchased.

Apparently it works well if you set up your system for it to work.

Any product sold by a vendor is sold to them from hype from the sales person of the product. I have bought many things from Home Depot that were junk. Home Depots fault or the manufacturer of the product?

Any media will work as long as there is sufficient surface area. Cermedia was a good media for me while it lasted. The manufacture succeeded in creating a porous material but most of us found out that it doesn't last. Seaside media is a good alternative to the more pricey Momotaro media. I used to line them up vertically but Momotaro has the better idea. It works better broken into pieces then put into a pile.

“Cermedia” was highly praised 3 years ago up here and I fallen into the hype. Just craps I think
Luckily I only got 1 box to try out
After that I bought the seaside media for all my shower need . So far so good nothing wear off much
I was able to break the piece in half only for smaller area and it is after 18 months of use
Still have some space so time to top off the box

OC, the media in the second picture looks relatively neatly packed, but isn't it better to place them randomly like in the first pic? I heard something about anaerobic areas occurring when too much surface area is touching another rod.

I just top off that same tote with 50 more pieces/ I keep the bottom the same
I do whatever I feel like as long my fish thrive
Honestly adding a saparate tote on top is probably better but I only have a very small tank running on this set up
