    Hello

Hi all, been lurking for a while, finally decided to sign up. I inherited a clay pond with my new house, and have been doing a lot of research as to how best to take care of it. Currently it is in the 2-3K ft^2 range, and up to ~10' deep. The guy who dug it says it was originally in the 15' range, and it has definitely silted in (along with a thick layer of leaves and debris). It will be some work to get it up and running, but I'm excited for the project. Thanks in advance for all of my questions, as I'm sure there will be many!

I'll work on getting some pics up as soon as we thaw out here.

    -Ryan

Thanks for the warm welcome. Now, as promised, a couple of questions...

Do any of you run a bottom drain in a mud pond? Are the two mutually exclusive?

The water level in my pond fluctuates throughout the year (maybe as much as 2 feet or more). Is there any way to run a skimmer in a pond like this?

The ones I've seen do not use conventional bottom drains.

I don't know of any commercial skimmer that could handle that much fluctuation. You might be able to diy a no-niche version that simply floats and adjusts with the
    water level.

You might need to start a new thread in this forum with your question because many might miss it as they'll assume it is a introductory thread looking at the title.

    Hi, Ryan,
    Welcome to the forum~
I have three mud ponds and its a different deal than a liner pond and in many ways its a good thing. You still have to worry a bit about water quality and overfeeding and overcrowding, but in many ways mother nature is good to fish in mud. i have flow-through in my ponds. In two cases i have a spring and what flows in, flows out through tubes. In dry seasons, i pump in well water. My third pond doesn't have a spring and has a dedicated well. i pump in water and it flows out through pipes into a ditch. I run air in these ponds all year long. as for leaves, i don't try to skim them. They are just part of the natural cycle of the pond. that said, i do add enzymes to the water often during the year to combat bacteria, but that's another story. visit the mud pond forum here on koiphen and look at other ppl's ponds.
i think you're going to have fun!
    don't buy too many fish.
you will want to, but get to know your pond and find out how many gallons supports how many fish.
    all the best!

Thanks for the responses. I'll start a new thread with any more questions.

I'll definitely start small with the fish load, and simplify my approach to the filtration. Big ideas, ya know? My wife thinks I need another hobby/project like I need a hole in the head, but I think this will be fun!

We're almost thawed out here, I'll shoot some pics of what I'm starting with soon.

    P.S.
Mud ponds have muddy water! You cannot clarify it. Back in the day, I tried, so saving you from flocculants (def. spelled wrong) and filtration. Mud ponds have a couple of months of clear water in March -April when the fish are still defrosting and a little bit at the end while they are chilling out. This does not spoil the fun. They still come up to eat. But it's not like having a liner pond.
