How do I get rid of worms on vinca vine

I have had varigated vinca vine for years and never had a worm problem untill last year. The very small worms wrap the leaf around them and eat it until its transparent, it then turns brown and slimmy. They move very quickly from leaf to leaf and plant to plant. By late summer they have taken over 8 pots with the vinca in it and I cut back all the vine thinking I could get rid of them. By time the vinca started to fill back out the worms took over again.
Does anyone know what they are and a good way to get rid of them.

      Thanks Deb

The worms only eat the vinca vine leaves?

Leaf rollers cause the leaves to become rolled.

Yes, just the leaves and only the leaves on the vinca vine. I have an assortment of other plants in the pots and they are only interested in the vinca.

All of the pots are moved away from the pond (so I could cover pond) so maybe I'll try spraying with seven now and again before I put pots back around pond when cover comes off. Its been warm enough that the vinca has stayed alive this winter but no worms so I'm assuming the worms went dormate for winter.

These worms dont actually roll the leaf, they fold it in half lengthwise and eat from the inside out until there is nothing left but the veins, a thin clear skin of the leaf and worm pooh.

One way would be to open the leaves, take the leave rollers and throw them in the pond. The fish love them. I get a few here & there on my cannas. By checking everyday, that would help to keep them down.

Or you could spray Bonide Organic Bacillus Thuringiensis Concentrate. You can get this at Lowes.

They do stay out year around. I have them in large pots that go all around the pond and they cascade over the pots and down to the water. In winter I move the pots away from pond to put cover on pond, the pots still stay outside. There are many years that they dont die back in winter and stay green, but sometimes if the winter is to cold they die back and start growing again in spring.
This is what they looked like before the worms took over.

They are a lot smaller than what I find on my cannas. They also multiple very fast, there can be hundreds of them in a few days and can eat an entire plant full of leaves in less than a few days. They are nasty little buggers.

This would be able to be sprayed/dusted pond side all season with no damage to fish or other plants.

Yes they do love the creeping jenny, thats why you dont see much left in the island. There use to be quite a bit in there but as soon as it creeps over edge of Island it belongs to the koi. Heres a pic of the Island after it filled out (just a tiny bit of creeping jenny in front left corner).

Perfect, I'll give it a try. I sprayed them with seven today but once they go back to edge of pond the BOBT concentrate would be a better option.

      Thanks Nancy and Rich
