      Bananna plant info needed

I just got some free plants from a someone that he had on his property tucked in a bunch of overgrowth for years. The trunks are big...he had to cut them to about 4' long to transport them. Anyway we dont know what kind they are and I have never had them before so would like some info. I am in Lafayette LA so zone 9a I think. Should I wrap the trunks in bubble wrap and leave it till its spring? Wrap them in bubble wrap and leave it loose enough so I can remove them on the warmer days? I know they like a lot of fertilizer and plan to hit them up this spring...I just dont want to damage these trunks becasue they are so big already.

Hi. You need to post pics of the entire plant for anyone to identify what type of plant it is. Does it produce edible bananas? How tall does it get? There are a wide range of banana trees, and so even with this information it may not be possible to identify the variety. I know there are some on here who dig up their tropical bananas each year and store them over the winter that can give you advice as to wintering the plants, but I would store them in a warm area in a pot of soil until warmer weather.

Im trying to upload them but im having photobucket issues. He said he saw friut on them before...but he also had 2 different kinds and wasnt sure if it was both or just one. And his were pretty tall....I think i have a pic of them before he cut them out. As for the weather it stays pretty warm here...usually hits mid or low 30s some at night but also can get 70 during the day...like today.

I don't believe there is much use in concerning yourself with the "trunk". Banana are not trees, they are perennial herbs and what we see as a the 'trunk', is actually a a pseudostem,a single stem rising from the rhizome ( or corm) and it is tightly wrapped with leaves. Once it is cut, the growth will likely stop and your best bet is to save the rhizome and start again from the root stock come warm weather.

Yes I realize its not a tree and a trunk...I just wasnt sure of the correct terms so thats what I called them lol. As for trying to save them I thought I had seen people in the warmer winter states trying to save the pseudostem so it can grow larger and taller the next growing season. It starts its re-growth in the center of the pseudostem right?

Did you get much of a root system with the bulb? If so, plant it in a pot or the ground and cut the "trunk" off at about a foot high. The growth will come from the center of the pseudo stem. If the plant was growing close to where you live I think it would live if planted and watered really good now. Shelter it on col nights by putting a 5 gallon bucket on it. Good luck! Bananas are not always easy to transplant.

Did he get the roots up with the root ball when he got you the trees? That will determine if they will survive.

If you are from the same area as he is I would put them back in the ground and not worry about them. Are those your pics of what you have or his pics? you might mulch them a little but really as far south as you are I would not be too worried. The only thing you dont know is if these stumps produced bananas this fall. If they did the big main stump will die but should put out pups before it rots completely. I know Louann never took her bananas in. I know that Sandy does not either and she lives there also

Craig I have always called banana plants just that. Lately you see them called trees also and somewhere I am not sure but I read that either is fine now.

I know there were some roots...I wasnt there but I looked on my camera system from work here and there so I could see a mass of roots on the bottom just not sure how much. Those are my pics of them...they are planted as of yesterday. I will mulch around them...the whole pond area hasn't been mulched becasue I didnt plant anything yet...im working on that now so ill add mulch as i do. I do not know if it produced or not...or even if its the producing kind. He had different kinds in a mass...and he saw some produce for the first time but not sure if they all would. They have banana plants planted all over the place down here so im sure they can make it in the winter...just wasnt sure how to handle single stalks that are just planted in the cooler months. I am hoping like other things in the winter it will concentrate more on root growth rather than leave growth so it can get established.

So the ones the produce will die once they do...what about the ones that dont...they live for a few years? Some of these stumps are probably 8" in diameter...and were probably 15' tall if I recall.

Sounds like you have done what can be done. If the plants are planted in your zone they should be okay. Just cover them curing the colder nights. Lots of good fortune wished for you. Let us know how they do.

I am not sure about the basoo bananas that dont bare fruit. I dont know how long they live. Frank has a nice grove of them, I used too have a fruiting variety but I lost them after having them over 25 years, They can grow really tall. you can get some fruiting varieties from https://patioplants.com/product-cate...ants-for-sale/ but they are out of stock right now but watch them they have great plants. also tyty,s http://www.tytyga.com/Carolina-King-...anana-tree.htm

I don't really want them to produce because they die after. I want them to get tall and shade my pond in the summer...was hitting 96deg water temp this summer. This things are growing already!

Update time...they have all grown very well. As I feared tho I have a lot of open area so the wind gets bad and the leaves take a beating. Still hasnt stopped them from now producing bananas...kinda cool.

Anyone happen to know what kind it may be?
