      Cleaning 55 gallon drums

I was lucky enough to score eight drums free of charge. A few of them were from soybean oil. Any tips on how to clean them thoroughly? I was thinking liquid dish soap and a power washer. The others were a chlorine based cleaner. I planned on doing the same then filling with water and a heavy dose of dechlorinator.

Perhaps if they had had organic oils a hit with PP is in order?

Dawn and hot water is a great combo on oil.

That's what I was thinking with the added power of a pressure washer.

I'm not ready to use them. Maybe I will clean them now then let them sit exposed till ready and clean them again. Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1447163108.695287.jpg

You just want to use something that breaks up oil. The pressure washer alone is very good though.
Well I messed that one up

Don't leave them exposed outside. I made that mistake. Dirt or dust sticks with oil is way harder to remove. I fill in hot water, let sit for about 20 mins, then clean them with dish washing soap, hot water again, then power wash. they come out very clean.

What everyone else said should work. If there is any soybean oil residue left after cleaning you can try Isopropyl alcohol. We use it to clean up fish oil and it's extremely effective at breaking up the oil immediately. I've never tried it on soybean oil but worth a try. We also use Dawn and hot water to clean some of our oily equipment. After you've cleaned the barrels I would leave them full of water for a while so that any substance embedded in the plastic can leech out over time.

I planned on cleaning before I let them sit and soak. Then wash again when ready for use.

Yes! While looking high and low I remembered a past customer of mine who owned a food manufacturing company. I stopped at the company and asked. Said I could take whatever I wanted. I was only able to fit eight. He had about 25. Good for now.
