      Noob, interested in breeding.

I would like to learn more about purchasing a few affordable breeding koi.
I think I want to breed fan tail, I'm still learning about the more specific types.

I'm not spending $500 per fish.
Not at this point. Once I know what I am doing and I find out if I
can produce some acceptable fish I would be interested in purchasing
      higher quality.

Where can I buy a few, not pond mutt quality?
Is it to late to breed them this year?
Can I keep the parents in a 90 gallon tank inside my house?

I have a 100,000 gallon pond and will build several stock tanks as needed.
I am still researching setups. Lots of good information on line for those.
Just not having much luck figuring out where to buy breeding stock.

      Thanks

If you do not have Koi and have not cared for them, I would not recommend jumping into breeding like this. I recommend getting a few and raising them. Once you can do that, then move forward into breeding if you still want to. There is a lot of reading on here and available in books that you can learn from prior to starting up an operation. If you are looking for some koi old enough to breed, or in general, you could check out craigslist and search for local koi shows to attend and make purchases at.

I generally agree with Jim, but here is some more feedback on some of your specific questions.

I think that is good. It's better to learn how best to keep them using ones you can easily afford. Also as you view more koi over a longer period of time, you begin to better see the types of traits that make a koi more or less valuable.

I don't know what is available in your area. But the auction at www.kodamakoifarm.com has quite a bit of variety of koi that are of different levels of quality. Occasionally you can get a good price on some here and there.

No. I like to spawn the early for a longer growing season, but I've started them in early July and still come out okay.

I would not do that, primarily because I believe it would stunt the growth of the koi, and I want them to grow big. They do that much better in several thousands of gallons of water, where they not only can eat the food you give them, but can nibble on algae and water-bugs throughout the day. Also, if they are big enough to have a good spawn, they might not like that 90 gallon container and try to bust out.

      Good luck,

      Matt

Lets be clear about this I am not an "Expert" but I have breed koi more that once. Until you do it you will not appreciate the work and numbers involved. 100,000 eggs per kilo, 5 kilo koi 500,000 eggs, if 50% hatch 250,000 fry that need feeding space and culling out. That also leaves 250,000 eggs that will rot and therefore pollute the water that you need to deal with as it will stink. So you need at least, male pond and a separate female pond, a spawning pond and a nursery ponds (as you don't want all your eggs in one basket) and some where for the female to recover. Culling or sorting out fry even just choosing the black fry in showa will take days to sort through 250,000 fry. So you have culled your fry to 25,000 koi what are you going to do with them all sell them? Not many people will want koi from an unknown source unless they are cheep they want a breeder they know if they are going to pay a good price. So if you look at all the resources you need time, water space, feed etc you are better off buying a top of the range koi and then giving it away to someone, you would save money long term and yourself a load of hassle!!! Most of the people I know breed koi not to sell and become rich (which you will not unless you work extremely hard and have luck on your side) but because they are addicted to koi breeding. There is a saying in the koi industry How to become a Rich koi breeder, first become rich and then become a koi breeder!
