The kohaku is a good example of SFF's sharp beni. Don't take it for granted. Beni can be a struggle. Some beni never cleans up. Some beni never stabilizes so you get smaller and weaker beni every year. The beni on your fish look to be very stable.

Slow growth isn't necessarily a bad thing. Fast growth often make a fish look worse and too much of it can blow out a fish. You are in salmon country so you will not likely to have that issue. I have found that some fish will not grow much one season only to catch up in the next season. There are too many factors that will affect growth but water temperature is always a major one. It needs to be warm enough and long enough for fish to go into growing mode.
Yes it was a cool summer august. I was surprised how calm this male was in the bowl , another one that is 25 inch male was not so calm. Yes the beni is good pretty happy with that . I have another male smaller kohaku that didn't grow too well and pretty much finished early at 14 inches.

      Update on kohaku

Measured recently at just over 21 inches , slow grower considering our warm summer. Beni has remained good.

The kohaku is worthy to be a long term fish. Nice skin and thickening beni.

Is water soft or hard in BC?
