      Friends 1 acre pond...plant question

Not sure if this is the right spot for this. I have a guy I know with a 1acr pond stocked with brim and bass. About 8' in the middle of it and about 6 years old now. Last year and this year he is seeing this plant that is growing from the bottom through the whole pond. It goes to the surface and then along the surface. There is no filtration or air on the pond...Lots of fish in it that I dont think he feeds. Anyone got any ideas....this pond is in south Louisiana. Thanks...

Based on what I'm seeing....especially the yellow flowers....I'd say it is a species of Utricularia, aka Bladderwort. It is a floating carnivorous plant feeding on small aquatic life such as Daphnia.

      Here's a link for ID'ing some US species. I'll guess U. gibba. http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/bio...ia-species.pdf

I'll have to ask him if it ever flowers...I didn't see any. The stuff floating in the first pic is dead crass clippings from mowing around the pond...at least thats what I was told. Its just the stuff in the water...I know he said it grows to the water surface and then along it but he didn't mention any flowers.

I'll be curious to hear what he says. I think I am seeing flowers in the second picture. They stand up out of the water and many times it doesn't they are connected to the floating mess.

My pond is full of it. i thought it was a type of string algae.
It does not like the Aquasphere Pro balls. It says about 12 feet away from them.
However they are not cheap and only last about 90 days.

I just bought a few gallons of aquafix to see if it will kill it.
I will let you know if it works.

RoundUp seems to slow its growth, but I have not been able to kill it off yet.

We use the sterile grass carp to keep under control. Legal here but check your state. Generic pond dye only now and zero herbicides. Haven't had a weed issue for many years.
