      doitsu...sumi

I'm hoping that over time the sumi on this koi will come in, some parts have faded, some have disappeared, and some new has showed, the new stuff is thin. Anyone know what to expect? or is this just a W.A.G.. kind of thing? conformation is to much of a concern, but sumi needs to be somewhat black, not the grey black that it is.

Well, first, the depth/thickness of sumi on a metallic fish, on average, looks like what you have as a result of the guanine in the skin. Then, because this fish is doitsu, the color is only coming through the skin not the skin/scales as with a wagoi type. This one actually displays better sumi "depth" than many Heisei Nishiki I've seen over the years. I purchased a couple of these while in Japan in 2001, and quickly found out what you're seeing now. They were re-homed in less than a year!

Its a Nishiki not a sanke. Nishiki do what nishiki do not what sanke do.

You need to elaborate more about the "why". This statement provides no information to be derived from for learning the difference between Heisei/Yamato and regular Sanke, be it Doitsu or wagoi.

I'm far from an expert . but what I have seen is that nishiki all mine been yamoto .That they like to change a lot and the reds and blacks are not as deep all the time as a good doitso sanke. Just what I have seen. But it could be just the fish that I have had.

      Yamoto?

So is this a Heisei Nishiki or just Nishiki....And what's the difference. This koi also appears that it will not grow to a very big size, as it hasn't kept pace with the others, could be a late bloomer though?
