I wait a few days till they're really swimming as they like to suction cup to things as they develop. Once they're on their own, I'll start adding food. Be careful w that fine net, if the water moves too strong, it'll crush their little bodies

      Congrats!!!!

I have a slime covering most of the bottom. Occasionally pieces are floating up and the fry nibble at it. Is it good? Bad?

      Yep, that's slime.
I got no idea what if its' good or bad.
      But the fry are alive.
Your ammo is the main thing right now.

It may be the eggs after they hatched. Once they start hatching, I take the fry out as the left over stuff will cause a spike and they'll fungus sometimes too. I normally have 3 pools running for this. 2 to split up a big batch then a 3rd to move the fry to once they're hatching

Its a mix of good and bad. Good that the fry are eating it, bad that they are also getting stuck in the free floating stuff.

They should. I wait 48hrs to give them time to fully hatch. Once they they hit their time frame, I move them and dump the rest. If it's in full sun, then it'll go down to 24-36hrs depending on the temp but normally, a major water change will trigger the last ones to hatch. I'll continue to check the eggs for eyes or fungus and I see the fungus is getting to bad, I'll cut my loses and move on w what's hatched already.

      Congrats!!

Tomorrow is day 5, so I will likely wait until Friday before doing much of anything to allow more to hatch. That day my floating cage comes and I may move them to the pond in a corner away from the falls.

Of course I need to be able to catch them and make sure they can't swim through the mesh on the floating cage.

Jim, this is an excellent point.
with my 2014 spawn, i first had baskets with mesh as fine as ladies' stockings. that's why had to put very kind foam covered aquarium type bubbler inside the basket. I didn't move the fry into the larger mesh until they were older and actually most of them lived on swimming freely in the intex until i could reasonably cull them.

      you'll figure this out.
      Stay the course~
      and mind the ammo!

I decided I had to change the title of the thread since they actually spawned.

More fry are coming up, which is great. They continue to feed off the slime that is coming up. I have been removing it though as they do not need that much. I have a bucket of dechlorinated water I have been dropping it into. Occasionally I see a fry in there and use a bottle cap to get it out and back into the QT tank. I need to make one of those little nets.

Another water change today to keep things low on Ammonia and fresh water for the fry. They are becoming more visible now as they are no longer two dots swimming around.

      Jim! You're doing great!

First thing in the a.m., you run out to see the babies, right? lol.

aquarium-type nets are too rough on babies.

i was able to buy Japanese culling nets last year. they are hard to come by.

if you take a little plastic container, tupperware type thing, and semi-submerge it near the fry, they will be sucked right into the container and no damage to little fish parts on scratchy net.

      all of this is IMHO.

I was looking at those nets too. Cost for a set of those and a slightly larger one would have been near $100 before shipping from the UK as I can't find them here in the US. It would be nice, but it goes against my survival of the fittest method of breeding budget. The container idea is the same as the cap i was using to suck them in. It will be easier once they are a bit bigger.

Correct! very expensive. The fry become much trickier to catch later on. I'd use the suction into a container method for as long as it works. totally safe for fish. i'm wondering if silky stocking-type footwear could be turned into a net with a bit of wire hanger. ? or possibly just pulled across the basket of an aquarium fish net.
