A concern I have is a large object such as a branch, leaf, etc, gets wedged in the waste tray flap and you dump several inches of water.
Spot on J.
Yep the float valve getting stuck is definitely a potential failure point of the system - particularly significant in the case of BE since mains water pressure means there will be an endless deluge of water getting into the system if that valve fails open. That is why I will have a high capacity catalytic carbon filter upstream of the water feed. I lost all my koi to a chloramine incident early this year, and there is no way I am letting untreated water anywhere near the rebuilt pond.
The waste valve bit will be sorted out by having a SS wire mesh trap in the SC preceding the RDF the catch anything that might make it past the skimmer basket. Nothing larger than 1 square cm should pass - RDFs aren't well suited to removing bulky things in any case.
I don't know why anyone would think of using chlorinated water to supply the RDF. A high volume charcoal filter that has a fleck valve to backwash is less than 600$. If you are going to spend 4000$ on an RDF, why skimp on chlorine removal.
Please remember this isn't a thread to debate the filtration system the OP used, it's their personal build. If you want to debate pro's and con's on
different RDF's there are already threads on the subject or start your own, but they don't belong here, nor do personal attacks.

I would address this scenario with the supplier of the product. I don't foresee any twigs, branches or leaves being an issue in my greenhouse.
I didn't know you were interested in this product, Matt. I would advise you to do the same as Jaymesey.
Please see this thread for an explanation. You can't make me feel any more stupid than I felt when it happened and I would appreciate it you refrained from further judgement. If you feel a need to berate me for my stupidity then perhaps you could use the pm function.

1st off, my condolences on the loss of the fish. I was unaware that this had happened.
I didn't mean to come off sounding insensitive, I was merely musing about the design of the drum filter. I have had numerous conversations with Paul (the vendor) about the design of the filter, as well as many other people on this forum. Paul had always welcomed questions about the product, but due to his vendor status, he cant start a thread because of the kiophen advertising policies.
I still don't know why I am or was being singled out in this mess. I have zero affiliation with any other drum filter vendors, nor was I intending to make light of anyone or their personal losses.
The intent of the post that generated this whole conversation was so unsavory that it has been removed from the thread and I'm glad for it. It was a blatant attack and full of incorrect assumptions he thought he could pass off as fact. When someone can't deal in facts they peddle falsehoods to instill doubt regardless of those they hurt in the process.
It's not the Koiphen most of us know, love and consider family.
Thank you for the condolences.
Let's drop it shall we?
Absolutely.
Marilyn, it has been a few months since anything was posted here, could you give us an update on how your filtration system is doing?
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your fish, you cherish them so much and take such care in selecting and caring for them. I haven't been on Koiphen much this summer, so sorry to hear the trolls came out and attacked you. There will always be trolls, let them wallow in their mess.
