      Winter and Nexus don't mix.

Well it looks like 10° temperatures and the Nexus don't mix here in Pa. Below freezing temperatures came before I was prepared to pack everything up for the winner. After a couple warm days I decided to tear everything down and noticed some valves were cracked from the ice. I kept everything running but apparently that didn't matter I still had some freezing inside the valves.

How fast would the water have been flowing through this particular valve?

It was the waste valve so there is no way to keep a flow going through it.

Ah, okay, that makes perfect sense then. For situations such as this I know there is a heated pipe tape that would keep this from freezing up on you, especially if you were intent upon running the system late into the Fall/Winter.

I have the Frost King / Easy Heat cables wrapped around all of my above ground PVC piping as so far it seems to be doing the trick. It's not recommended for this application, indeed, it's specifically NOT advised for this application, but so far no problem. I figure given that it's thermostatically controlled at just above freezing and the water flow itself is carrying heat away back into the pond there isn't much risk of overheating the pipe. So far it appears to be working but then again, we haven't gotten into the truly bitterly cold period yet.

I have heat tape on all the pipes under the nexus and then I have pan lights on the waste valves..
