A picture says a thousand words. Can you post a photo?

There are red algaes in stagnant water where I live. Is the soil red in Texas where you live? Could be many things.

There are a few members on the forum that live in Texas. Hopefully they will have an idea.

      A picture/photo would really help.

are there any leaves in the pond? i have seen the water turn a tannin color from leaves that have started to breakdown and this could look reddish brown.. if its more red then brown i could be algae..

My water did this as well in the first year. I had thrown in some drift wood and thought that was the cause. I think it is the water just going through it's cycle. UV? Give it some time and water changes.

Leafs that fall in your pond , pond water changes color it's called Tannin .
Water turns brown like tea color.

Maple leafs are the worst , i put a net over my pond to avoid this .

Imo, those temperatures are not low enough to warrant turning off the filter for the winter.

Are there any exposed pipes that might freeze during the 3 weeks of 20 degrees? If I were you, I'd just find a way to insulate any exposed piping and leave it going all winter. Your fish will not go into torpor (dormant) at those temps and will continue to be active and make waste, even if you are fasting.
Imo, it's not cold enough there to leave it off.
      Regards,BarbJ

Yeah most of the pipes are hidden by plants .I just don't understand why it did that its about a 8 year old pond and its never turned color here in west texas we can have real bad cold spells for weeks then the weather warms up the pond is 3ft deep with a retro bottom drain we had a couple years ago drop down to -16 in the day for about 2 weeks then back up to the30s

If I were in TX I definitely wouldn't be shutting down my pond. Negative 16 degrees if it stays that cold would warrant it for those couple of weeks. If it warms up consdierably during the day, I still probably wouldn't shut it down.

Except for dead end waste lines I don't believe you can get cold enough to worry, unless you end up with several days of power outage. Pigtail type runs to a valve for waste can be problematic as the water is not running and the pipe is allowed to go cold for a week or more. I have one of those pigtail ends coming out of the bottom of my bead filter, but because it is in a shed, I have not had any problems, but someone posted tonight about winter and their filter, where the waste valve cracked.
