Chiba prefecture Shinkokai branch tosai show. This is near Narita Airport, one of the two airports in Tokyo.

Oliver and I have been a part of an annual fall harvest with some ZNA members from Chiba and a friend I met at a koi event early on in Japan. Here we are harvesting nisai and sansai shiro utsuri from a breeding program by these kichis. We select a limited number of tosai (60) to grow on until next fall. The nisai from last year's tosai are selected individually by each participant and then if they are female in May, get placed into a sansai pond to grow on another year. We do this to see how far they can go and learn from their development. The pond fees are shared between the participants ($300) annually. The koi are ours as we each contribute to the senbetsu and sometimes provide a male to breed with the White Tiger female (a Matsue Koi Farm offspring). I purchased a nice male Isawa Nishikigoi male to add to this breeding as the sumi is very nice, scalloped type.

      Fun times in Yamakoshitakezawa!

The Hunt is on! Time for koi porn. check facebook for as close to real time as you can get. These YouTube vids take longer to do and post.

This is from Isa's first nisai harvest on this past Sunday. Lots of high end eye candy for an early harvest. You can see some of the big name koi hunters were already there...

Marutoyo is a very small farm in Uonuma area in the town of Obiro. The guy does pretty good sanke (older style Sadazo), showa and beni kikokuryu.

      Worth a visit every year.

People ask about tosai every year...there are tosai that are available this time of year, usually the first culls of the keepers, so not very quality. Then there are "jumbo" tosai in the spring which are just large tosai grown in the warmer water over the winter. Then there are JUMBO Tosai, which come from large oyagoi and have huge size before going out to the mud ponds. These will be in the 65cm at nisai range...which is HUGE. Here are a few high quality JUMBO tosai that I videoed this late spring at Dainichi. I didn't even dare ask for a price.
