      Should I be concerned?

I've had fish that developed "pox" type growths but they seem to look different than what my chagoi has and
this has persisted for the last few months I've had her...

I pulled her to take the picture and at that time I just applied some iodine, so the sore is discolored a little from
that, but is there something else that I should apply? It's a pretty solid bump so I didn't attempt to scrape it off.
Her fin starting to get red streaking, like an it might be infected, which is why I'm writing. Before it just remained
a bump and not much else.

She is acting normally and eats like her name (Piggy), but I just want to be doing whatever needs to be done to
help her get rid of the ...er... whatever it is.

Bumps similar to this were described by Brady to Gordon Parr that it was encysted juvenile anchor worm. He treated the pond with Dimilin and they disappeared. Not saying that that is what it is, and don't know the mechanics of the Dimilin in this case, as Dimilin is a chiton inhibitor preventing the development of a shell so the exoskeleton of insects and shell fish stop growing and cause the strangulation of the insect. But it is worth a try.

Richard and Steve...the cysts I had were so bad (juvenile anchor worms) it took 2 full doses of dimilin to rid them off of my fish. That has been many years ago -- and I have never seen them since!!!

      Thanks for the guidance everyone.
It was brought up to me too that the life cycle of anchor worms is pretty short and from
doing some reading it goes egg to adult in about 28 days ... but she's had the bump for several
months now. I ordered some dimlin-x just in case, as it's about the only thing I don't have in the
      cupboard.

I'm going to see if I can pull her next weekend and and remove it and put it under a scope and
see if I can see anything.

Where do you purchase Dimlin and is there an equilavent product ? I may have to get some because I've got a similar issue with one fish too. It's on the caudal fin like Steve's, it's a small hard white bump.

Please post a couple of good pics. You don't want to start using chemicals if you do not need to.

I might not do it this weekend do to the temp's... the pond temp has dropped to 52* and I'm afraid it will keep dropping with the
air temps, so I might wait till it warms a bit. But will take pics and keep you posted when I'm able to treat.

I don't think my cyst is anchor worm, but here's where I bought the Dimlin.

      http://www.ebay.com/itm/321073332408

I plan on scrapping the cyst off completely, treating with 3% hydrogen peroxide, then applying Tricide-neo and burn cream.

Our temps are back up so yesterday I finally got to pull Ms. P.
Big fish equal bigger tanks... took 200 drops of clove oil to put her under!
I cheated and found 1/4 teaspoon equals about 30 drops.

The cyst was solid and not filled with fluid or anything... under a scope a couldn't see any
bugs. I scraped it off and rubbed in a mixture of Tricide-Neo and Silvadene cream. Hopefully it'll heal
up well because it's a challenge to pull a 35" fish by yourself!

Not many pictures since I was a little preoccupied and wet bloody hands and phones don't mix well.
First pic is part way through removal...

I think that she will be fine, but with warmer temps, she would probably heal up faster.. pretty big koi to put back in the qt,though.

      Thanks Dan,
Sadly my QT isn't much warmer than the pond, being in an unheated, uninsulated garage. I
think that's a good project for next year, to get it off the garage floor and better insulated
so I could at least heat it if need be.

Nice job cleaning that up Steve! It looks great.

With our "warmer" temps this week. You might get lucky and she will heal up although I am sure it will be slow with 50 something water.

I hope you "two" do not have to tend to this all Winter.

Great job Steve, it looks like the thing came off very clean and the fin is smooth and not rotted at all underneath.

200 drops of clove oil, wow. Great info on the drops/teaspoon equivalent. I'm guessing there were a few anxious minutes bringing her out the anesthesia (I always hold my breath on mine).

Keep us posted on her progress.

I think I get more stressed at the beginning when they roll over and I probably don't let
them get under enough. She was fine when I was scraping the outer part but when it got
down into some nerves she jumped and you can see where she caught a corner of the scalpel
on her side. The whole thing is nerve racking!

I was wondering what that was from. I was hoping it was not from the net.

Again good luck to the two of you

      Thanks Monte!
She's really not hard to "net", but the bad part is I only have a 30" net so
I have to slide her into a large bag from the net while still in the pond because
the net won't hold her. I've done it a couple of times now and almost have it down
to a science. She's so gentle that it makes it pretty easy job... the hardest part is lifting
her from the pond to the smaller tank.

So far so good. Hope it worked for you. Can't imagine catching and removing her from the pond by yourself. Stay safe.
