I need a retro bottom drain. No rocks or gravel thank god. How hard are they to do?

What a big job. I personally like rocks and would gladly take all of yours. Just not for my pond. I only have sandy loam here and its great for digging in but I have to go to the river and cart rocks home if I want to landscape anything

You are welcome to as many rocks that you would like. Just need a truck and a strong back.

Wow...that looks exactly like our pond. Were you able to remove the rocks from the walls? If so, how did you do it. Any Ideas of how to do that would be appreciated.
We have added 2 retro bottom drains, 2 Zakkii sieves, 2 mc50's and a shower filter with Cermedia.
      Thanks,

Both the ponds that I redid and took out the rocks, I just left the big rock on the sides of the pond. The rocks were to large to move with one person and I figured as long as they're off the bottom then it would be a huge improvement. Sounds like your pond is a huge improvement with the sieves and showers you added.

Pretty easy. The hardest part is having to go through the side of the pond and liner if you're incorporating a pre-filter. If not gravity fed then just run your piping up and over the pond and hide with some rocks or something. Any bottom drain is one of the best things you can add to a pond. Without having a bottom drain, it's like having a toilet that you can't flush.

Thanks for your reply. That's what we have decided as well. We can't remove all of rocks from the sides, but taking out the majority has got to help. Yes, we can't believe what a difference the sieves and shower have made. We plan to add another shower in the near future.
      Thanks again,
      Terry & Ruth

I didn't love the look of the bright blue fiberglass hot tub that I turned into a pond. Once the algae grew it covered it fine except for the dry area between the water line and the rock landscaping. I found this stuff online called rock on a roll. I thought it really helped the appearance of my pond. Might be something for people to consider in place of black liner or actual rock. :-)

We have had lots of folks tell us to also remove the sidewall rocks. That would be great, but when they built our pond they ran the liner up to the top of the ground level and cut it off 2" to 3" above the dirt edge. They then placed rocks on the bottom and up the sides while placing rocks on both sides of the liner edge. If anyone has ideas how to remove the wall rocks and anchor the liner that is 2" to 3" above water level we would like hear them, any help would be appreciated. We thought about adding on to the liner to allow making a shelf to set edge rocks on, but we were told that adding on to a 15 year liner would not work. There are rocks that are so large they were placed with a crane, so replacing the liner is out. So any tricks you know of that would enable us to remove all rocks would be greatly appreciated.
      Thanks,
      Ruth & Terry

We have taken some of the rocks out around the sides, but unfortunately haven't figured out how to remove them all. We have removed all the loose gravel from around them so the water can flow through. We are hoping that will help some.
      Thanks Ruth
Ruth I think it will be fine. If you have removed all that can be removed, you have done all that you can do. The rocks around the pond is one of the reasons that it is so beautiful and natural looking.

My pond has a shelf all the way around and is 10+" deep. I grouted rock onto the shelf and this is where my problem is. With any hard rough surface in the pond the koi can harm themselves when they flash or more often when they eat and one spooks the others and they all tear off in different directions. I have seen many times the fish bolt into the rocks. Also when the males get to chasing the females they run them repeatedly into the rocks. The Aka Hajiro is female and she is blind in one eye. I assume it is from the rocks.

A black rubber lining may look bad but is the best for the fish.

A black rubber lining doesn't stay black for long. Algae grows on it and it looks very natural. Just need to have a bit of patience.

Hate to say it but if your liner is 15 years old it might be time to replace it
If that's the case and you dislike the big rocks take them out and put a new liner and under liner in start from scratch add a real bottom drain etc

Yes, we have noticed that. We have gotten 3 of the ponds completely cleaned out with no gravel on the bottom and you're right, you don't see the black liner.

      Thanks for your comment

      With log

Not a good idea to put a huge log in your pond.

      Without log

This is after taking the log out, cleaning all the awful gunk out of the pond and rebuilding the side wall.
