I'm curios who has gin clear water without uv?
If you do post brief description of your bio filtration..
Counting my own I have seen in person 3 ponds able to run without a uv..
And all had one thing in common
Let's see if there is a correlation

here goes....I do have UV but do not turn them on.
12,000 gallon pond, FULL SUN
Depth: 6.5 feet
Flow rate: 14,500 GPH
Prefilter: 2 RDFs
Bio filter: 13 CF Cermedia total for 3 shower trays.
Feeding: 7 times per day
Power usage: less than 600W
the goal is to get particles out of the water column fast as possible and starve the algea. I am curious to see if I get string algea this coming winter.

Tom can u clarify your shower.. I'm confused with your posting on the bio media thread
Also how does most of your water return to pond?

I have had gin clear water for well over 20 years. No uv. shaded.
I should add that once in a great while things change for whatever reason. But well take care of itself and become clear again.

I have a very simple set-up, just a skimmer with the pump inside supplying water to my bio filter/waterfall. I've had the pond up and running since Spring 2009 and that first summer was the only time I had green water. It has been clear since. It is in full sun, except during the hottest part of the summer and that's when I put up my shade cloth. I don't have a UV. I just do frequent water changes, keep extra aeration going all year, use koi clay, and always keep my barley bales going year around in the filterfalls. I know my fish load is more than I need, but I only feed twice a day. I have 4 koi, 2 catfish, 7 goldfish and 1 bluegill in mine. I'm not sure if that's enough information to help you with your observations but hope it helps.

Piglet: "How do you spell love?" Pooh: "You don't spell it. You feel it."
Its a simple equation at its base. Starve the alge of what it needs to consume to survive and green water goes away. Excessive bio, a way to remove DOC's, and proper prefiltration.
Zakki sieve to generic ultima to cermedia shower
water has been crystal clear since adding the sieve.
pond is covered..300 sunny days 280 plus sunny days a year
UV is only plugged in March to April to allow bio to catch up
Smaller grow out pond. Fairly highly stocked, but clear to the bottom w/no UV. High turnover with S/G. Have some plant cover, otherwise full sun.
It is not an all year round condition, but currently my water is gin clear. (During pollen season and after windstorms I have a temporary clouding, but its never very bad)
4500 gallons, 4 fish fed twice a day. Filtration is green matala mat that is covered with one layer of tulle in savio skimmer. This goes either to a waterfall box which is completely filled with horizonal matala mats (blue and green) then topped with a no-see um screen. Or it goes to up flow bog filter with 6" open water feeding up through no-see up screen then 4 inches of gravel and various plant roots. No UV.
Two small pots of planted lily pads in pond. Shaded by three mature trees. I allow about 1/3 of bottom to have about 2" depth of algae on it, because it looks pretty. I've debulked the algae twice this summer with a scoop.
Maintenance is rinse savio filter about once a week and empty skimmer basket. Backflush waterfall box and bog once a month and rinse waterfall filter pads twice a summer. No water changes via hose (just evaporation top off), but the pond overflow has been quite active this year due to many big rains.

Cermedia in a shower and two 55 gallon Moving Bed filters with K1, Mechanical is Sieve, RDF and S&G, but I believe the trick for me is virtually no sun with my tree coverage. (3 hours at most starting at 10am)
I too struggle with cloudy water in the spring and early summer. Its not green water but a yellow tea color. After the pollen goes away the pond clears up but the string algae starts to grow. I've not had green water in many years but I do run UV however this year its only one and the bulb is a year old. Lots of filtration to keep the ammonia low is a key to keeping clear water. Reduced feedings will also help keep ammonia low.
Need more Koi
Rosekoi,
Since you kicked this off, are you going to tell us more about your pond? Do you have a suspicion as to the determining factors involved?
Paul
13 y.o well established system, no U.V. for the past 2 years. As was stated before, if something happens and throws the balance off, like a heavy acid rainstorm, I may get a bloom that lasts a week, but they are always fleeting. I built this pond when I was very young, and it needs to be updated BADLY. I have no bd, a simple upflow filter containing jap mat, matala, k1, and lava rock. All of the loose media is held in large nylon mesh bags and is washed weekly. The size of the filter chamber which is filled to the max, is roughly the size of 1.5 55 gallon barrels. 5 koi, at this point the length is a guess until the fall measurements but I would say 25'', 21'', 15'', 15'', 14''. fed between 4 and 8 times daily depending on my schedule.... never have any ammonia, nitrite readings and almost never see nitrate over 40.
My water does not turn green with UV off so I leave it off.
