A while back I was visiting a ponding friend. He was preparing to trash a couple of Fishmate 3000 pressurized filters because the canisters were cracked. I just can't seem to throw anything away.
This is one of those stars aligning projects. I had the canisters. I recently bought some used K1. I have other friends who need a temporary bio-converter for their pond to use until they decide if fish in their pond are for them. SHAZAM!!! Today's project.
First up, get the filter out and inspect the damage...
Won't be using the UV.
Or these...
Bottom of can doesn't look so bad...
At least until I cleaned it up...
Spider cracks everywhere...
Nothing the Handy-Dandy plastic welder can't fix...
So I washed everything in Dove dish soap and was ready to reassemble.
I did leave the UV sleeve. I didn't want to weld the opening closed. (Just being lazy. Besides the O-ring was still good.)
Next is where I had to use some Yankee ingenuity. I was replacing the sponge block with a loose filter media. I had to be able to add the K1 to the can while keeping it out of the center column. I used a piece of 3" PVC.
Worked out pretty well...
Even filled the old "bio media" basket.
I used Jack's "juke-em-slick" on the O-rings. (O-ring lube with FDA listing. Available at pool supply places.)
Put it all back together and ran it for a few hours to test for leaks. (None found) Tomorrow I will circulate a mild PP solution for a bit and it will be ready for service.
When this is returned it will become part of my QT tank filter.
