      Bitten Koi

I came home the other day and went to feed my Koi fish when I noticed something had bitten one of my koi's back. There is a really good size chunk out of its back and you can see the koi's spine. Amazingly enough he is still alive and this happened 5 days ago. What can I do to help heal it's back? I moved him from the outside pond to an aquarium inside the house to try to keep it from getting infected.

OMG! I can't believe this little guy is still alive. Seems like that might be difficult to treat. Hopefully some of the experts here can help you...
I'm thinking that a large turtle may have done this...

First of all, absolutely make sure your water parameters in that tank are pristine. No ammonia, a cycled tank, etc....or a lot of water changes.

Do you have a water testing kit?

Do you have access to injectable antibiotics or Tricide Neo?

Honestly, doesn't look to me as much a bite as a possible severe infection. Notice the bones are all still intact but the flesh has been eaten away. I most certainly would get a full reading of water parameters, post them and act aggressively if your taking a shoot a treating. Poor fellow is in bad shape.

In all honesty, you should euthanize it.

that was not a bird and if it had been an infection, that much necrotic area would have killed the fish (its missing aprox 1/10th of it body) ..... you have a turtle in the pond that needs to be removed. (my guess) Either way, I would euthanize. If you do try to keep it alive, there is so much tissue exposed to pathogens that infection is most likely going to set in. If an infection does take hold any form of bath, dip, or topical is going to be extremely painful upon application.

Omg, I feel so bad for your fish. Does it appear to be flashing or is it acting "normally"? For now, as suggested keep the water as clean as possible, until you decide what to do. Maybe contact a vet to see if they have a fish expert, or know of one. Or contact a local koi club (go to google and put your area in + koi club) and see if they have a person who can come out to your house and help. Otherwise, go to the main forum, and in your title post help needed in Florida. We have a lot of people on here that live in Florida, and may be able to help out, if you don't know how to do injectable antibiotics. If it was a bit or attack, it is probably infected like fishin4cars said. Time is critical, I doubt you can do water medications to save him.

If you decide to euthanize, there are different methods you can use, just ask.

You could see the back bone when it first happened but since the bone has broken off. I'll try to get a better pic of the back tomorrow after I get the clove oil. I have to pick.up another test kits tomorrow also amd then I will post parameters. I have though about euthanizing it but wanted to see if it was worth saving first. We thought it was going to die when we first seen it because he was barely swimming. He pulled through it though and has been more active the last couple of days. We don't have any injectible antibiotics or tricede neo. I have some idione and triple antibiotic cream though.

I don't think either would leave a wound like that. A cat would fish it out, and leave claw marks. I've had a cat attack one of my fish before. it really looks like something with a mouth, picked it up and bit a piece out. I'm not sure what could do something like that. Are any of your other fish affected? (did they hide at all?) Is your pond water clear? You might want to try to put a net over it to prevent more attacks.

No turtle in the pond but my in-laws have outside cats. Thinking it was one of them. Not sure how to move this post to main forum. Have been changing the water daily in the tank. It does look like an infetion is starting. That is one of the reasons I moved him inside away from the others. I did take him to the person that I bought him from for her to see and see if she could advice me on what to do. She is actually the one that directed me to this site.

The pond water is clear and no none of the other fish were affected. I had taken the water lilies out to clean the pond and didn't put them back in for a couple of days so they didn't have anywhere to hide. I didn't think about anything doing something like this when I left the lilies out. He does have a little spot on his tail that looks like something stuck its claws into him. From the way it looks we think that one of the cats were trying to get him out but he swam to the bottom and it couldn't get him.

I believe that if this fish is showing signs of health, in that it is swimming around and perhaps even eating, you might as well ride it out and see what happens. Personally I would not, but that is just me. I'm sorry this happened.

I would be looking for the cause to prevent further incidents. If possible you might set a live trap or two and bait it with tuna or salmon. Might provide some interesting results. I have three of these traps which I bait periodically. Cats, squirrels, rabbits, mice, (I also put mouse traps in the live trap), Opossums. No raccoons in our area as of this morning but that could change. They will come if there is enough garbage set out.

I'm so sorry... but I wouldn't feel too responsible as far as moving him. I think this was probably inevitable.
