      Cool Lotus from seeds

July 7th, my seeds came in and into a bowl of water they went!

July 11th, one developed a hook! And a second looked split down the middle.
Late the same day, a wee bit of a hook showed on the split seed!

July 12th, first seed has a longer hook and second's seed's hook is obvious!
Hoping the other two seeds get with the program soon!
I bought two packs of 5 and got 2 extras, so 12 seeds total. Stuck 4 into water, saving the others for next year. I don't need a zillion of them growing!

      =D

Wish I had known they were this easy years ago. So much better than spending $45-65 on one plant from the nursery!

I wish you luck, but in defense of retail nurseries ( which I am not)...you have unknown seedlings wrt size, color and flower form that will take a bit of effort on your part and will also incur at least the cost of a container...which can be appreciable. Then, like as not, your first flower may well be a year away.

From a nursery, you can select the lotus you like by name, so you know exactly what to expect and it should bloom this season and is in a suitable pot. They do definitely provide a valuable service and deserve compensation.

Secuono good luck on your lotus seeds. I have grown lotus from seeds before. It is a way to have lotus that you can say I grew this myself. And it might be a surprise when it blooms. A couple of friends of mine in Tennessee can get them to bloom in one season, but they do start them earlier in the year. Here in zone 6 they bloom the next year.

Looks good! Remember to do water changes to reduce chance of "melt." Post pics as the plants grow.

Three years ago I tried starting lotuses from seed, and that's how I killed them! Not enough water changes.

Good luck to your little seeds!

Water gets scum everyday, so I've been changing it that often. The other day, 3rd seed sprouted, 1 to go! First one has it's stem up out of the water now, waiting for the leaf to unroll.

I'm sure the website listed what kind it was and if not, I can ask the lady. But I don't particularly care, I just want natural shade so I can get rid of the foam pads. I used tarps in previous years, but they don't last and are a huge pain to deal with, especially with the crazy wind gusts we can have, rips the tarp right up and out!

That is great news! Once they are ready to plant, make sure you put them in a large enough container to grow the plant in. Often, people think that they are just little plants and put them in small containers, but once they are growing you should not disturb them or replant them so it is best to start them in a container big enough to fulfill their needs. The size plant they are to grow to determines the size pot needed. Since you do not know the size, it is best to use a large pot. Enjoy!

I started some lotus this year and they are doing well. Still tiny but definitely growing! I'll try and post an update photo soon. It definitely is a slow process but it is pretty magical to watch them grow!

Nelumbo nucifera is the Asian lotus. The American Water Lotus is Nelumbo lutea.

Once they bloom for you, the confusion will be resolved. The American Lotus(N. lutea) as the name suggests, is invariably yellow. And most forms of the Asian species
      (N. nucifera), are pink.

Weird, when I looked it up, most were white! I just don't want pink, both my lilies are pink...Actually, my other lily just bloomed, but it rained so much that it drowned the flower, it was white!

It is not impossible to consider that you may get a white bloom, there are white varieties of N. nucifera. Unlike N. lutea, that has only one other recognized variety ( N. 'Yellowbird'), there are literally hundreds of kinds of nucifera. Only two species of Nelumbo, but they encompass a host of different forms.

Will have to get a new pic tomorrow, many more leaves are starting to come up. Gotta go out and buy them some containers to grow in!
