Stupid mistake, Totally Devastated, Huge loss

I got home this evening to every Koi keepers nightmare. All my water was gone and all my Prized Koi were laying on the bottom, most dead, a very few in really bad shape, three survivors so far but two of them got seriously sun burnt. For the third time I was in a hurry, doing all the feeding and filter cleaning before going to work and I left the vortex clean out valve open. Only this time the pump never shut down and never lost suction and it pumped all but maybe 25-30 gallons of water out of 10,500 gallons. I'm just in total shock. I lost every female I had, all but one of my high end fish, even lost our Shamu, the fish everyone comes to see. I really don't know right now what I am going to do. No possible way I can ever replace this collection. and I'm not talking replace ones like them, I'm talking financially I can't replace what I had invested in my collection. Trying to decide right now if I even want to crank the pond back up.

OMG, I am so sorry this happened to you! We all make mistakes, and unfortunately can't take them back, but please don't give up or beat yourself up over it, time will help heal your pain and you can recover. Hang in there, there are lots of us Koiphen folks that understand your pain and are thinking of you!

Oh this is simply devastating. As Cheryl said, go easy on yourself...what's done is done. Take some time, sleep on it and then take stock of your enjoyment of the hobby. I sure hope this isn't enough to force you to abandon such a remarkable pond that is such a great home for the pets that we find so much enjoyment in.

I am not sure if words could really fathom what you are feeling right now, and to be honest I am not sure how I would react coming home to that. The optimist in me says keep your head up, fill the pond, and keep going.

This could be the right time to rebuild or refine anything about the pond that you may have wanted to change over the years. It would be a shame to have gained all of your experience and knowledge only to retire from the hobby. I hope that you will enjoy it again.

Fill that pond. Then stock it with mutts if you have to.By what i see in the pic's of the pond and your fish you are someone the hobby needs.A person with the drive to become excellent at what you do.You will find a way to get past this. Can you really walk away from something that gave you so much joy.Good luck in your future Koi shopping and i am sorry for your losses.

Guys I highly recommend looking into using aquarium controllers on your pond. They are not expensive. A Neptune Systems Apex controller rigged up with a float switch on the main pond water level could have switched off pumps and sent you an alarm email and/or text message.

So sorry you've had this experience It's been almost a year since the same thing happened to me, everyone gone except for one original that ended up surviving. I also came home to a pile of dead fish and know exactly what that's like, and YES a year later it's still upsetting, you gotta go right out get some more fish (they don't have to be show fish) and just put them in the pond. It helps. Focus on the survivors & the future!
