Good job. I've got several with the same issue as it seems my water can sprout shimi's from about any
fish... do you sedate and what do you use to remove the scale?

If it's a surface shimi, you shouldn't have to remove any scales. Simply use your thumbnail to scratch the shimi off the affected scale. If it's deep rooted, well, that's another story. I saw Toshio Sakai do this type of removal. He sedated the fish, then took the point of a scalpel and did a sort of twisting move to dig into the skin to remove the shimi. Then put Lamacil under the scale where it was and placed the fish back into the pond.

      Steve
I used clove oil and I just use a razor blade scraped it lightly then povidon iodine...

      Mike
Yes it like paint on scale..I did used my fingernail a bit..hehe

I also surgery two other koi...a10" sanke with extra long ray pec fin...my dealer reccommend cut it when tosai....my brother chagoi has similar problem like Steve's chagoi on the tail..so I cleaned it up for him...

Overall it was my first sedate operation and so sucessful...with help from 3 n 5 yrs old sons...one knocked a bowl almost into my camera

Also guide the fish to swim again is fun..especially the 25" chagoi ..
Thanks to mr Karl for the emergency sticky...very helpful..
      Appreciate

I am cluless at sexing koi. Rain is better than me. I think.

Your kohaku is 100% females from looking at multiple strong clues. Most of the time, the vents of younger koi aren't nearly as obvious. For me, I get better clues from rubbing the p-fins than looking at the vent.

I really enjoy this sakai kohaku alot. She is eating as much as other but growing slowly.
She is about 23"+ and i like the thing about is that she doesnt has the eggy stomach.

Time to invest in a rectangular measuring bowl, your koi are getting too big for the viewing bowl. LOL.
Tell seaside Tom to hook you up with one.

      Nov 2017 update

some how i miss the update on this last month
4-1/2 years since i acquired her
she gain 1" which at slightly over 24"
it is hard for her to stretch but i think her body bulkup very nice
i dont think she can be a candidate to the 30" club for this small pond
she is the best female not to have eggy stomach
the beni is thicker and solid
no simi come back on her since the last time i scraped the surface shimi
i think this is the best grow out koi i ever pick as a novice
so dont ask me why i have so many SFF kohaku
      they do have the qualities

The body is very strong. The beni has thickened. She is a nice example of SFF kohaku.

wow, beautiful fish. Like a good deal of my tosai assessments, i was off the mark. And bravo to you! this fish has improved tremendously over the past year especially the conformation. The body tightened up a lot. This girl is a little tank
