      2014 hobbyist domestic grow

Kurt from Kleinholz koi farm will supply domestic koi for a grow out this year. The price will be $100 plus shipping. Some sample photos of the actual fish included is this grow out are posted below. If there is enough participation there will be prizes awarded based over all quality in October. 1st place winner will win 1 of 5 tategoi nisai from Kurt's farm. 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be koi food. The prizes will be based on quality of the fish not on achieving the most growth. So picking a fish is also very important in this. Kurt has many fish and the photos posted at selection time, will have more than enough fish for the grow out. He does not want someone purchasing a fish, that they would not be happy with. Sometimes there are just enough fish and the last person selecting is stuck with a fish nobody wanted. The selection process will be similar to last year. The KP names of those involved will posted in the order they select. They will PM me their top 5 picks of fish. If all the fish on someones list have already been selected, I will contact them to supply more fish choices. If you would like to be involved in this grow out send me a PM.

There are a few other things that go with this GO.

1.) a special price on my farm's koi food Breeders Choice. It is a 4mm pellet size and what these tosai were raised on. If you would like to know what the price is please send me a PM.

2.) a special deal on these tosai.........buy 1 get the 2nd 50% off! (The way this would work is if you purchase 4 tosai the price would be 100 for the first 50 for the second 100 for the third and 50 for the fourth)

Now I guess I should give some background on these koi... The original parent set that spawned the female parent of these koi was a cross between a female Dainichi Sanke and a Sakai FF ginrin sanke and a Sakai FF sanke. The pairing resulted in quite a few ginrin kohaku and 2 were kept as Oyagoi. The female ginrin kohaku was then bred to an Isa X Sakai FF kohaku and sanke resulting in these tosai.
The light orange beni is a trait common with our Isa kohaku and the skin quality is a combination of the grandparent Dainichi sanke and the Isa kohaku. The skin still has a bright white but it is also thicker and more milk like. The sumi on most of the sanke does not resemble matsunosuke as much as it reflects more Dainichi Sanke characteristics. However in my opinion the best part of this genetic line is the body conformation, it has more depth than most resulting in a more powerful koi than gains weigh and thickens faster than matsunosuke koi.

Body and skin. In the second group picture there is a sanke at 4 o'clock. It's a bit smaller than the others. The skin isn't as white and the body is thinner. It's a male, now this is not an exact science but it is something that I have picked up as a trait of this bloodline

You can also look at the vent and it will give you a good idea as to the sex. But most of the time when buying from pictures you don't get that luxury.

Another question... I guess it's sort of standard belief that gin rin koi don't grow inherently large vs non gin rin koi... Does this belief apply to your gin rin koi?

It depends on what you want to see in your koi's growth rate. If you want a 57cm (22.8 inch) sansai then these ginrin koi will be just fine. Of course their non ginrin sisters/brothers will most likely grow a bit faster.

Im thinking more if they have the genetics to grow and finish as large as your non gin rin?

I think there is a little more to it than that, however I do believe that they won't stall at 26-28" if that's what you mean. But it's a matter of how they are raised and the time spent, food fed and water quality. They grow very well and they have good body shape but it might take them longer to "finish" than other lines.

After looking at the beauty of the fish in the original pics, I'm with Redman. And thanks to Kurt Kleinholz for making such nice fish available. I think I would not be disappointed with any of the pictured fish. Carolyn
