I know that had to hurt. Looks like you have done a great job of wrapping it up. I hope it makes it for you. So far we have had a warm Fall and I hope we have a warmer winter this year.

It is 11 pm and it is 64* outside.

Delbert I have been calling this one by the wrong name. The Hybridizer commented on the thread because people started arguing over the name. I don know she crossed an Alocasia Odora with an Alocasia Portei and thats where it came from.
This is what she had too say. She is one of the main people that Hybridize alocasia.

LariAnn Garner wrote this on facebook OK, I didn't want to have to do this online, but here it is. I sold some of my Portora hybrids to Ron Weeks many years ago (before 1992) but after I had published in Aroideana (journal of the IAS) the correct grex name of the hybrid (Alocasia x portora) as is required to establish a valid name for a cultivar. Ron then went, without my consent or input, to place one of the plants in tissue culture with Agri-Starts, failing entirely to mention that it was my hybrid, and what the correct name was. I didn't find out about this until a year or so after hurricane Andrew devastated my plant collection and work. At that point I don't know if Ron came up with the invalid name "portodora" or if Agri-starts did as a marketing ploy, but that invalid name appeared when they started selling the plants. Later, other sellers made up other invalid names, such as "portidora" and "portadora". I eventually contacted many nurseries and explained the correct nomenclature to them - some corrected their listings, others did not. They are all attempts, IMHO, to make it look like they are selling a new and different plant, but in reality, all of them are the same cloned plant that Ron gave to Agri-starts and that came from me originally, albeit in TC without my consent or input. So the only horticulturally valid name for this plant is Alocasia x portora.

Delbert Like I said before LariAnne hybridizes Alocasia that is what she does for a living I think, This is what she a few of the others say about fertilizing. I know you said you dont fertilize very much. Well I dont either but it I want mine too grow like yours I am going too have too do something. By the way Patioplants.com is where I got my big Portora's and they called the Portadora thats where I got confused. Anyway this is what three of them say about fertilizing. lari lives in fla. Andrew lives in NC and Brian lives in AZ. so lots of difference. we are more in line with NC than the other 2 I would think. She surprised me with what she said and I will try it. Because my water comes right out of the limestone.

Brian Marsland a good trick for growing portora real big is water well with Miracle Gro every other week once its warm. Just keep doin it

Andrew Leonard I fertilize at every watering during the Summer growth period. It is very hard to over fertilize an A. x portora "Red" (For me) when hot and rainy.

LariAnn Garner Brian Marsland have you tried using the Miracle Gro for acid living plants on your Portora? I found that many Alocasias prefer a medium on the acid side.

I kept adding my granular all season long also
Now add acid loving liquid fertilizer mid week . It can only be super big

So I have been thinking of making a shade structure for my plants . I don't know what I want yet just something big and massive .
Then I started looking at all the big logs piles , I have at the farm that didn't make the grade for the loggers.
I'm going to get a portable lumber mill thing , I could put my chain saw in and cut beams out of the logs .

      Well no

My poor grandkids tiny spot will have to be relocated / but improved

The spot is 25 x30 . I want to add 8 ft or so of shade around what I have right now.
Are summer sun is brutal , when it hits the high 90s
im also going to beef up the old structure I built in 93 while I'm at it .
