      Pond starting to thaw

This has been a rough winter. My ponds have been frozen for the last few months. They started to thaw this weekend. I saw my fish today they all looked to have made it through the deep freeze. There is still a lot of ice on it - maybe a 5 foot circle opened in the center of the pond. I know at one point there was about a foot of ice on the pond. Usually I start my filtration up around this time of year, but more cold weather is coming this week. It was a relief to see the fish are doing well.

My pond is still under 15" of snow.. and empty. The fish overwintered in the shop, they didn't seem to mind the 68 degF water all winter. Now I need the snow gone so I can replace the liner and get it up and running!

I had about 6-7'' of ice on the pond to the point where i walked across it a few weeks ago, i freaked out because the whole in the ice was not very large and upgraded to a 1500 watt deicer. that sucker took care of the ice in less than a week. today i was ice free for the first time in months... i even did a 25% water change. it made my day.

I don't know how you all deal with the temps you have in winter! My pond issues are so minimal compared, I'm in awe. I'm amazed so many koi do make it through. My hat's off to you all!

I'm with you snow-bound guys on the ice and sub zero temps.
I finally got to see the two ponds in the field today and yes, there are big openings in the ice, which is what I was hoping to see. I was too far away and too high up to see if there are any floaters, but hoping that nature took care of my kids.

It was a tough winter even in my neck of the woods. The Angel Trumpet is cut back ever year- it just grows that fast. But lost the Wandering Jew plant on my shower. And peripheral plants. I feel lucky it was only plants I lost as others have not been so fortunate.

It is a testament to how hardy carp have evolved to be. I am still in awe that these little bass turds can go 6 months without food hanging out under ice in 32 degree water. its so funny when friends come over in the winter and say, "where are you koi?", and i say "in the pond" and they realize im not joking.

Pond was 1/2 ice free during the warmer spell. Of course the area the fish slumber in is still ice covered so I have no idea if there are any casualties this year or not. It's going to be mostly ice covered again with the next cold snap though. I hate to say it, but if we're going into another cold snap I would prefer another 6 inches or so of snow on top of that ice to help insulate it a little.
Have had good holes open in the ice all winter for the pond to be able to gas off at least.

Wandering Jews are a great plant that grow well and add some good color, they just don't tolerate the cold well. I am south of you and last winter it took out my patch of them as well even though they were covered.

Cut that plant way back and I'll bet it will regrow. Give it lots of water and a little fertilizer.

Went to a local nursery 17 years ago, and found Wandering Jew growing wild in their open spaces. I ask about it and the attendant said "take all you want". I'm still propagating from those cuttings.

My pond has been frozen until last week. It suddenly melted and it got into the 60's this past week. Weirdest thing ever for me to have a warm February. I drained the pond this weekend and the fish grew a ton under the ice. I didn't even know that was possible.

I haven't seen my fish yet, but I know the phenomenon of the fish getting bigger without food in the deep freeze -- why?
      lol.
      magic, i guess.

Yeah, I stop feeding in October and don't feed again till usually April or May depending on when the ice melts. Koi are pretty hardy to go 6 months without food.
