      Magoi Bloodline Fish

OK very recently I've come accross these and would like to learn about a few things

I noticed on the magoi showa I saw that the colors are very bright and they have a different look to them compared to other normal showas...why? How do they get magoi fish anyway? Does it mean they literally take a wild carp and breed it to a koi, or use a karasu or even a dark chagoi as a 'magoi'? I would think the addition of a common carp would scramble up the genetics so you'd get a bunch of mutts with a few koi-ish looking fish mixed in, so how does it happen? Curious here

I think that only Russ will have enough information about this to answer your questions. Here is what i THINK i know. Magaoi are not wild carp, they were one of the early mutants that were dark and very large. If you look at pictures of magoi you will often see an orange belly not found in wild carp. There are two types of magoi, one that gives us the line of asagi and the other that gives us the utsuri/showa. I know that dianichi and some other prominent showa breeders use the asagi magoi to created the 5 color showa. This is when there is shiroji, ink black sumi, hi, reticulated blueish sumi and i think the fifth color is a play on how the sumi looks different on shiroji than it does the hiban. I believe that the toshio sakai magoi line does not come from the asagi magoi. What makes his koi different is the same things that make his sanke different. He is an innovator and is quality driven to the extreme. He crossed his line of showa with a magoi and continued to selectively breed until it met his extremely high standards. As to what can be expected of these fish…. i don't know for sure. i have seen two adult examples that were mind blowing. I am not going to assume all will turn out like that, but the line is capable of producing giant, extreme examples of quality nishikigoi which is the the greatest achievement any koi breeder can claim to have obtained. I purchased the smallest showa of the group Russ picked up because the quality was on point and the body is as well. Hopefully i can further illuminate the potentials of the line with development pics later down the line.

In the tub is a 90cm Magoi Showa and there is a close up pic of it's back with the Sumi X. The one in the bag is an 85cm Magoi Showa. The others are also examples of small Nisai Magao Showa. They can vary in appearance quite a bit.

I found another excellent example of an INC Magoi Showa with Atarashi Sumi.

I found this picture that a friend, Alexander Sanchez, took of the 90cm Magoi Showa with the "X" on it's back.

Based on the pics you showed, the magoi fish do not look so bulky, are they less bulky in nature?
