      Found a new inhabitant today

I was doing some work around the pond today and found this guy in the upper pond. I've had the waterfall shut down for a couple of weeks and the upper only has about 10" of water in it. So I put a piece of flagstone in for him to sun himself on for now. I'll probably take him out and release him by the creek before it gets too cold. This is the third turtle that has showed up at the pond over the years, the other 2 were baby snappers, so he looks a bit more agreeable!

I would make sure he can get out in case he just fell in & is not aquatic.

Turtles have a built in GPS & will always try to come back to where they hatched. Even if there is no water close to you, release him somewhere close to the area you found him.

No expert, but it appears to be a regular box turtle. I would just make sure he can get out on his own. I would wonder if he somehow accidentally got himself in there.

I vote Box Shell and they aren't usually aquatic.

I happened to be watching a garden show dealing with naturalized landscapes while I ate lunch today and they showed a turtle that looked just like him. Said it was an eastern box turtle. I'll put a piece of log angled out so he can climb in and out when he wants. My main worry is kids bothering him on their way home from school if he wanders out near the street, but we'll see I guess. Kind of hope he stays around, but I don't want to do any kind of an enclosure to make him stay.

A lot of people keep them as pets. We had some that lived in our yard for a few years. Chain link fence keeps them in. And they would bury up under the azalea bushes most of the time. DH forgot about them and sprayed some insecticide on the Azaleas and we never thought anything about it until much later when he was digging around the Azaleas and found the empty shells. Really made us sick to realize we had lured them and then killed them.

Nice find! Yep,it's a box turtle. They do occasional light swimming, but get tired much more easily than water turtles, and really need easier exits . Mostly they just use water to drink and bathe.

Best set back on dry land and allowed to go on it's merry way.

      Regards, Eric

It's been years since I've seen one of them around these parts. They are so cool!

Well, he has moved on. I put a piece of log in for him to climb on and he got right to it, made his way to the ground and headed off to the northwest with a purpose. I was trimming trees so I watched him to make sure he wasn't going to walk down the middle of the street, but he went across into the neighbor's yard. The heading he was following would have taken him to the creek just north of town, so I'm assuming that was his travel plan when he wandered into my upper pond. I checked the next street over and the highway later on and didn't see any evidence of a flat turtle, so am assuming he made it safely to where he was headed.
