      Sanke or Showa?

Curious as to the question above as well as people's opinions on conformation, colour and sex.

First time posting a picture so I hope it works!

May try to take some more pics, closer to the fish would be better. Also if you can get a picture with the fish pointing straight down at the 6 o'clock position it will help get a better picture of the confirmation and pec fins. This is where most will be looking to try to help sex. Now that you have a picture posted to give a estimate of size a close-up would help with possibly sexing and would help more on the finer details of confirmation. Sanke and Showa can sometimes be hard to distinguish between the two, sometimes it's very easy. Yours is one of those that borders right on the line but IMO, it appears to be a Sanke. Do you know the age or the breeder? As others post it may help some as other members know certain breeders lines and can use that to help evaluate the fish better. IMO, The confirmation looks pretty good from what I can see. I'm not fond of the heavy Beni pattern toward the face and heavy sumi toward the rear of the fish. That balance is a little off but the overall balance of color is pretty good. By that I mean there is a pretty equal distribution of Beni, Sumi, and Shiro.

It is a Sanke as it has Sanke Sumi.
people like to vehemently defend their purchases and find it incredulous that anything could be better

Good catch! I missed looking at where the OP was from. Also forgot all about the import laws of Koi for Australia.

Could well be Sanke but the Sumi on the head would indicate a Showa. Try looking in its mouth. If there is no black in the mouth than it sure is a Sanke.

I see sumi in blotches - not bands, and while it is difficult to tell from the photo, the sumi does not appear to go below the lateral line; therefore, my vote is for Sanke.

The sumi continues right down the sides of the fist well past the lateral line and almost right down to the belly. Does this influence any decisions? The fish was born roughly 1 year ago and is coming into its second summer now. It is about 12 inches long currently.
