Ive only ever caught one... I was shocked when I caught it didn't know what it was, I was also like 12 yrs old fishing the old muddy south fork river here in NC at a buddy's sleep over. Haven't caught one since, but they are definitely still around.

They are gorgeous fish though...and there teeth are "inset" hardly visible until they latch on to their prey... I would love to have one in a monster pond one day!!

Sounds like fun! Wouldn't the Bowfin take a chunk out of some of those other ones?

I dont think so Ive seen them kept with larger arrowana and larger gar... I think the rule of thumb with predatory fish, and one thats always worked for me, though mine were alot smaller, is that if kept fed they will work well with one another...

Though I would research alot more before I did anything... And the bowfin though closely resembling are not as aggressive as the snakehead... Now that is a monster I would love to keep!!! Too bad its like a federal crime now!

Yup its pretty sad the mass hysteria created by the wild life preservation agencies a few yrs back over the snakehead caused alot of wrongful deaths to the bowfin population... People were dragging them in trying to get the bountys placed on the snakehead only to be told they mistook the bowfin. Wonder how hard of a hit the bowfin actually took... Gosh now I'm gonna have to go fishing this weekend and try to catch one lol...
