That's fun! It would be exciting to see what you could produce. I just don't have the room to do it. LOL

I used to have a HUGE (didn't start out that way) herd of bluegill that kept the fry at bay. Probably is that the bluegill breed like....well...bluegill. lol

I'm not sure how the orfe are w/ reproducing but so far, no babies.

"Considering there are two that my husband has not become aware of---yes. But a new pond will solve this; right?"

If you think so, let me tell you about when I built my 17,000 gallon because my 5,000 was too crowded. The day after I moved about 1/2 of the fish to the new pond, they spawned to fill it up!

Fry grow well in that much water, and were impossible to catch. While I have gotten rid of many through the years, they are still the reason this pond is once again crowded. I rarely have any fry survivors now. I think my sarassa coments eat them.

Yes it is nuts and I'm completely aware that. I know that any bump in the road could be the end. Lucky for me the pond is in the shade almost all day. Temps stay low, plenty of air, and lots of filtration. The B*****ds ate nearly 80 lbs of food this year.

I think it is a minimum of 250 gallons per fish.

I don't think we can have a blanket response to how many gallons per koi, It will all depend on what filter systems you have in place. You could have a 1000 gallon pond with one koi and if you have little to no filtration that koi might eventually not make it and definitely will not thrive. It all will depend on your pond system and maintenance routine. for Instance take that 1000 gallon pond with no filtration and add just a flow through of fresh water, this would drastically change the equation. I think it all comes down to keeping your water and what regimen you use to keep it healthy for our wet friends. There are a lot of different ways to get to the end of this journey.

      Greetings!

I have two ponds: one 20K gallons with apx 70 fish most 18" plus some leviathans pushing 24" . The second pond 1.5 million gallons, with 4 koi, an assortment of wildlife, including a resident blue heron. I would like to move fish to the bigger pond. Could someone point me towards a thread or video on how-to? My understanding is that just netting the larger fish can harm them as the thrash about.

The 20K pond is 75x8x6 feet deep, impractical to stand in.

Wow. And my DH has started building a 10X10 addition to our 12X18' pond because our 12 fish need more room, ha, ha.
