      Green water

So I have a little pond in my back yard..

Nitrates and Nitrites all show great scores..

I have koi, trout, catfish, sunfish, shiners, turtles, frogs, lilies, Hyacinth, Lotus, ducks, and just a whole system of nature.

Unfortunately for me, I have green water. The pond gets sun all day long. I've been researching filters. S&G. Bog. Anoxic. On and on. And really, the system is alive and well without any issue. No dead fish. Everyone is happy. I just wish I had clear water. Is this a fight worth fighting? There's no apparent stream. I believe it's spring or gravity fed.

Just looking for options or advice.

      70'x130' -- ~500k gallons.

      Thanks.

      rich.

Wow, that is a heck of a pond! Beautiful, I don't have a clue how you could clear up that much water, but it looks awesome like it is. I'm sure you will get replies with suggestions soon!

Here's a company in Georgia that produces pond logs. Reduce phosphate levels which results in algae reduction. Just the ticket for your pond.
I use the smaller version the pond zinger for my koi pond.

there are many ways to clean a pond one is blue tint and helps shade a ponds from excessive algae ,also barley straw and yeast to help eat up algae blooms naturally I use all those and helps keep everything in check and works well add a 1 kilo yeast fresh block from bakers mixed into 3 gallons and spread over the surface and will cover 1000sq mtrs and will treat 100,000 gallons of water every month for three months will boost plankton .

You could get a small prefilter and then add a big UV sterilizer. If it is sized correctly it WILL get rid of the algae in the water column. I am not sure how the chemistry of a natural pond works and am not quite sure if you would be taking things out of the water column that may be needed.....

If the green is coming from algae growth, I use barley hay in my pond to keep the algae under control.

Once you clear the pond that size you will be attracting a lot of predators. The green water helps also in creating a balance in maintaining a healthy water in an underfiltered setup. If you are going to clear the water, you may need to a much better filtration system including powerful UV.

I would think adding lots of aeration would help, it didn't look like you had any going...beautiful, though!

I think your pond is perfection. This is my opnion only...but i think it's too big a pond to filter...and somehow wrong, to me, to attempt. It's like trying to filter a Japanes mud pond.

For a mud pond and the type of fish you have the clarity is good. Green water is very healthy for fish. If you succeed in getting rid of the green water other less desirable aquatic growth will come in. The blue pond dues definitely help but only slightly. No yard fertilizer within 300 ft of the pond and lining all banks with gravel packed in at least 10 ft into the pond will greatly help. Doing the gravel would require draining the pond and bringing in equipment to do it correctly. I have a friend that has a old time windmill reproduction and pumps from a well when the wind blows and their pond is exceptionally clear. They also spent $9,000 for the setup.

Your pond looks so nice I wouldn't do anything except a small amount of blue pond dye.
