      Turtles + Chickens??

I never dreamed about owning turtles, but this board has me interested!!

I have a spot for an out door turtle pond/area separate from my koi pond. But, it will not be well guarded from predators. And it seems like that is a bad plan for the turtle pond.

However, I have a chicken run for our backyard chickens that is 10' x 20'. It is very secure from predators.

My question is: could I build a small turtle pond inside the chicken run? Could turtles and chickens get along? We only have 5 hens and they care more about bugs and green grapes for treats than anything else.

My hens would eat them if they are very small. They fight over crickets and any kind of bug or worm. DD even gave them tree frogs. Which I shudder to even think about and told her not to do that anymore. Their favorite green food is clover. But they will eat anything. Bread, cooked grits, mashed potatos, any leftover food except I do not give them meat. They love oranges.

I believe my hens would eat turtles, or at least try to. They even love canned chicken that I use for dog treats when I am working with my dogs on agility. The hens will fly up and try to grab it out of my hand. Also, your hens would drink out of the turtle pond, and turtles poop a lot - that would not be good for your hens.

I watched in horror when my hens attacked a mouse and tore it apart and ate it all in about 30 seconds. A turtle wouldn't have a chance.

All reptiles carry salmonella. If you put the chickens and turtles together, you may infect the chickens. If you eat their eggs, that's not good for you.

Even chicken eggs shells can have salmonella if they aren't properly handled. After all look where they come from.LOL

I don’t think its a good idea for all the reasons above.
Many years ago when I was in school, I cleaned out a barn for some extra money. There were chickens walking around free everywhere, and they started following me around as I was moving things around. Then I moved some boxes that had mice under them. I was shocked to see those chickens fighting to catch a mouse and was swallowing them whole. It was so gross, that I didn’t want to eat chicken or eggs for quite a while.
If they can eat a mouse, I would suspect they could eat a small turtle.
