I've read on Koiphen that you can start a Daphnia culture using chicken manure, however I can't find any locally. Does anyone know of a substitute I can use to start my own culture? Please post your secret recipes. Thanks!

look on youtube. Why do you want Daphnia? Baby food? I have a ton in my pond, I've seen them skirting through it.

Yes I need a lot of daphnia for my fry. I would really like to learn how to start a culture for the experience though.
I looked on youtube and it seems everyone bought a culture online and is just showing how to keep it going.
I have chicken poop. I could send you some.

I had very good success w daphnia last year. I did buy a starter culture, but after all you've got to get some from somewhere to start. Fed them green water and yeast. Had thousands in no time. This way might be a lot easier and less shall we say unclean than chicken poop. But I kept only about 20 g going. If you're going large scale, then seeding w chicken waste or something similar would make sense.
How many fry do you have? I wonder if that's what mine were eating, to survive so well over winter; always had their noses in the algae, munching. When I've taken my pond water to school (teacher), I've seen tons of little organisms, well worthy of a fry to eat, in addition to the algae. Good luck with the Daphnia, you'll have to let us know how it goes.

When I raised some of Kat's babies, I ordered daphnia from somewhere online. They shipped it ever week for a few weeks. I think it was about 6 weeks. Because I wasn't at home to try to produce some myself. It was a little expensive. Then when I raised fry from my fish, I just fed them ground up fish food and they did good on that. I left some fry, 2 or 3 in the stock tank by accident and it just sat out under a tree all winter. I found them next summer and they had survived on whatever all that time.

Starting a culture from start can take a few weeks, if the conditions are perfect. I have tried with chicken manure and by accident in a five gallon Spackle bucket with some oak leaves!!. I think it's easier just to buy a culture, check ebay or craigslist. I have found a cheaper way to feed them, use rice flour( asian market), its a lot cheaper than yeast and I think they may like it better!!
good luck
You can just put barley straw in water, I never needed to add poop

I just started an experiment with chicken fertilizer pellets that I bought from a local Lowes. I put some pellets in a clear plastic gallon jar and covered it with fine mesh, so mosquitoes don't lay their eggs. After three days, the water turned dark brown and smelly. I felt like 3 inches of soaked pellets on the bottom of the jar was a bit to much, so I started another experiment. I poured some of the brown tea brew into another jar and diluted it with water. I don't think anything can live in the first it is to concentrated. Now its, wait and see. I found this interesting article on culturing daphnia http://www.discusnews.com/article/cat-01/moina1.shtml

Please let us know if that works! Sounds very interesting.
I have been raising daphnia for years to feed my tropical fish. You need a starter culture to get going. Green water is the best food for daphnia. You can also feed them yeast, rice flour, or blood meal. Here is a good read on daphnia: http://www.caudata.org/daphnia/
