      baby soft shell turtle

Last spring one of my hubbys coworkers brought him a baby softshell turtle he caught in a ditch at the plant they worked at, there were several in it and the company was going to eradicate them . he knew we had ponds so thought we'd like to have it.
We put it in our canoe, that houses water lillies, and a few days later it rained, the little guy escaped, until this morning that is. 2 of my dogs were barking madly, so I went out to see what they were barking at, they were staring at the ground and at first it looked like they had lost it and were barking at a rock, til a closer look revealed the missing turtle, it's about an inch or so bigger and has no fear. hoping to find a more escape proof home for it.
here are its pics we took this afternoon. hope y'all enjoy them. Isn't it the cutest!

Glad you found the turtle. I don't think I have seen a soft shell before. Cute!

I have seen them in the lake. I loved turtles when I was a child.

our son raised one he found when we lived in Florida it was just hatched and crossing a road, he had it for several years until it got so big that he was turned loose at a lake on a friends property, called him homeskillet since he was the size of a frying pan.

Great turtle for a pond until they get large. they primarily eat snails, small crustaceans, and left overs along the bottom at that size. They only rarely leave their water to travel across land. usually they are very good about staying put. Be aware though as they grow they are very good at catching small fish. they also really like a layer of sand to bury up in if it's available or possible. Very cute little fellow, been quite a while since I've kept a softshell.

glad to know about the snails, cause I have a huge supply of them, also the ditch minnows we use for mosquito control reproduce like crazy, so it won't go hungry!
